In listening tests, many students read the questions before the audio starts. Does this help? A 2008 study with Japanese university students gave some surprising answers. When students saw only the answer choices first, they got fewer answers right. They often chose a choice with the same word they heard.
But correct answers often use different words. So when you preview, read the question first. Find out what you need to listen for.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
先読みが役立つのか、どう読むべきかがテーマなので C。
Q2. What happened when students saw only the answer choices first?
When students saw only the answer choices first, they got fewer answers right. とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "preview" means ...
pre-(前に)+ view(見る)で「事前に見る」。音声の前に問題を見ることを指すので C。
Reading the questions before the audio starts is a popular tip for listening tests. But what you read first makes a difference. In 2008, Yanagawa and Green tested Japanese university students in three ways. Some saw both the questions and the answer options in advance.
Others saw only the options, and a third group saw only the questions. Scores were clearly lower when students saw only the options. The researchers think these students simply picked options that contained words they had just heard.
Test writers often use such repeated words as traps. In another study, 78 learners scored best when they saw the questions between the first and second playing of the audio. Even so, the same learners said they liked seeing the questions first.

Q1. In the 2008 study, which format led to clearly lower scores?
Scores were clearly lower when students saw only the options とあるので D。
Q2. When did the 78 learners score best?
scored best when they saw the questions between the first and second playing of the audio とあるので A。
Q3. What can we infer about learners' feelings toward previewing?
設問を音声の間に見たときが最高点だったのに、the same learners said they liked seeing the questions first とあり、先読みの効果を実際より大きく感じている可能性があるので B。
Listening-exam advice rarely varies. Read the questions before the audio starts. Yanagawa and Green put that advice to a test by varying whether Japanese university students saw the question stems, the answer options, or both before hearing each passage. When only the options were shown, performance dropped significantly.
The authors' explanation was lexical matching. Test-takers, they argued, picked whichever option repeated words from the recording, which is exactly what distractors are built to exploit, since correct answers tend to be paraphrases. That account comes from the score pattern alone, though. Nobody observed the students matching words.
In Sherman's study of 78 learners, a "sandwich" format, with the questions appearing between two hearings, produced the highest scores, even though participants strongly preferred to see the questions first. Buck's think-aloud research suggests that listening is largely inference, a matter of building meaning from context and background knowledge instead of collecting individual words.
A quick look at the question stems can tell a listener where to aim attention. Too much reading, by contrast, may pull attention away from the audio itself. These effects may shift with test format and proficiency, so a learner can compare scores from practice tests taken both ways.

Q1. What is the main point of the passage?
選択肢だけを見ると成績が下がり、設問を2回の聴取の間に見る形式が最高点だったなど、何をどう先読みするかで効果が変わることが全体を通じて述べられているので C。
Q2. Why are distractors effective against lexical matching?
picked whichever option repeated words from the recording, which is exactly what distractors are built to exploit, since correct answers tend to be paraphrases とあるので A。聞こえた単語をそのまま含む選択肢がひっかけになる。
Q3. What does the author suggest about the lexical matching explanation?
That account comes from the score pattern alone ... Nobody observed the students matching words. とあり、点数から推測されただけなので B。
