準惑星とは？冥王星より遠くで新しい候補、大きさ約1000キロ

Scientists have found a large icy object beyond Pluto. It may be a new dwarf planet. Dwarf planets go around the Sun like planets, but they are smaller.

科学者たちが、冥王星よりも遠くで、氷でできた大きな天体を見つけました。それは新しい準惑星かもしれません。準惑星は惑星のように太陽のまわりを回りますが、惑星より小さな星です。

The object has a temporary name, 2026 ED138. Right now, it is about 46 times as far from the Sun as Earth is. Scientists think it is about 1,000 kilometers across. That is still smaller than Pluto.

この天体には「2026 ED138」という仮の名前がついています。いま、この天体は、地球と太陽のきょりの約46倍も太陽からはなれています。科学者たちは、直径が約1,000キロだと考えています。それでも、冥王星よりは小さいです。

A scientist in the U.S. spotted it on October 13 with a computer program. He used pictures from the Rubin Observatory in Chile. No other camera in the world is as big as the one at the observatory.

アメリカの科学者が、10月13日にコンピューターのプログラムを使って見つけました。その科学者は、チリにあるルービン天文台の写真を使いました。この天文台のカメラより大きなカメラは、世界のどこにもありません。

The object was hard to find because there are many stars behind it. Only five dwarf planets are officially known, and Pluto is one of them. Scientists need more observations to check its size.

Astronomers have found an icy world beyond Pluto that may rank among the biggest objects ever discovered in that part of the solar system. The object, known for now as 2026 ED138, was announced on October 27. It was found in data from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which sits on a mountain in Chile.

Matthew Holman, an astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, spotted it on October 13. He ran Rubin's images through a search program that he developed with Kevin Napier. The program sorts through detections and links the ones that come from the same moving object. Mario Juric of the University of Washington then dug up 20 earlier Rubin observations, the first from March 4.

The team's estimate puts it at 600 to 1,500 kilometers wide, based on how bright and how far away it is. Juric said it is the largest object found beyond Neptune in about 20 years. It now sits roughly 46 astronomical units from the Sun, with one unit being the average distance between Earth and the Sun. Its path around the Sun leans nearly 25 degrees away from the flat disk where the planets travel.

ED138 had probably gone unnoticed because it lies near the plane of the Milky Way, where crowds of background stars make moving objects hard to pick out. Older images from another telescope in Chile extend the record back to 2016, giving the team more than 10 years of its path.

Only five dwarf planets are officially recognized: Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Haumea and Makemake. Telescopes elsewhere can now follow ED138 to pin down its size. Rubin began a 10-year survey of the southern sky in June 2026. No other camera in the world is as big as Rubin's.

正式に認められている準惑星は、冥王星・ケレス・エリス・ハウメア・マケマケの5つだけです。これから、ほかの天文台も観測して、大きさをはっきりさせることができます。ルービン天文台は、2026年6月に南の空の10年間の観測を始めました。ルービン天文台のカメラより大きなカメラは、世界のどこにもありません。
