Students got better grades in classes without phones, a big study in India has found. The study was published in the journal Science in October.
Researchers studied 16,683 students at 10 colleges and universities in India. They chose some classes at random. In those classes, phones went into a box when each lesson started. Other classes did not change anything.
After one semester, the phone-free classes had better grades on average. The change was small. But students with lower grades before the study gained the most. Because the classes were chosen at random, the study can show cause and effect.
There was also less off-topic talk in the phone-free classes. Even the teachers used their phones less. After the study, students in the phone-free classes liked phone rules more than before.
The researchers said more research is needed for younger students in schools.

Students in India earned higher grades when their phones were collected at the start of each lesson, a large experiment has found. The study appeared in the journal Science in October. The researchers came from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Jawaharlal Nehru University in India and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
The trial covered 16,683 students at 10 colleges and universities in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. For one semester, groups of classes were randomly chosen to go phone-free. In those classes, students dropped their phones into a box when each lesson began, while the rest kept their usual routine. Because the groups were picked by chance, differences in results can be traced to the phone rule rather than to other factors.
By the end of the semester, grades in the phone-free classes were higher by an average of 0.073 standard deviations. A standard deviation shows how widely scores usually spread out from the average, so the gain was less than one-tenth of that spread. The authors noted that effects of about 0.05 standard deviations are typical in big education trials. The biggest gains came among students whose grades had been lower before the trial. Grades in the phone-free classes also ended up closer together.
Attendance did not change, so the researchers believe the improvement came from what happened during lessons. Classroom checks found that lessons had fewer disruptions and students chatted less about other things. The rule was only for students, but teachers picked up their own phones less often. Students who had spent a semester in phone-free lessons grew more in favor of limits on phones.
The findings differ from a 2025 study of 30 schools in England, which found no clear difference in English and math grades between schools with full-day phone bans and other schools. The trial was carried out in higher education. Its authors said they cannot yet say whether the same would happen in primary and secondary schools.
