Every year, about six million antelopes move across this land. That is more than the number of people in Hokkaido. They walk long distances to find water and fresh grass. Experts say it is the largest migration of mammals in the world.
UNESCO also put the area on its list of World Heritage in Danger. This means the area needs special protection now. The government of South Sudan said it will use the new title to protect wildlife. It also hopes more tourists will visit and bring jobs to local people.

UNESCO added the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape in South Sudan to its World Heritage List on July 26, 2026. It is South Sudan's first World Heritage site. South Sudan became an independent country in 2011. The decision was made during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.
The site covers two national parks, Boma and Badingilo. According to a 2025 aerial survey, around six million antelopes migrate through the area every year in search of water and grazing land. The International Union for Conservation of Nature, which advises UNESCO on natural sites, describes it as the largest mammal migration in the world.
The landscape was not added in the usual way. It was the first natural site that IUCN evaluated under an emergency procedure, which is used when a place faces serious threats. At the same time, the committee placed the site on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Being on that list can help a country receive international support for protection.
South Sudan's government said it will use the listing to promote tourism and strengthen wildlife conservation. Officials also said they expect the status to create jobs and improve life in local communities. The listing is also expected to support scientific research.
In Busan, the host country, South Korea, also expanded its own World Heritage site of tidal flats, called Getbol. The next session of the committee will be held in Istanbul, Türkiye, from June 27 to July 7, 2027.
