たまごっちが30周年！世界出荷1億個、いま若者に再ブームの理由

Tamagotchi was a huge hit in the 1990s. In Japan, 10 million were sold in just eight months. By July 2025, 100 million had been shipped around the world.

Now the toy is popular again. Many young people wear them on keychains as fashion items. Some fans from the 1990s now play with their own children. The newest model, Tamagotchi Paradise, has a dial for zooming in and out.

Owners must feed their pets, care for them when they are sick and clean up after them. A pet can die if it is ignored for too long. The toy sold 10 million units in Japan in its first eight months.

After the first boom faded, Bandai kept releasing new models every few years. A 2004 version let players connect devices using infrared signals, and color screens arrived in 2008. Tamagotchi Uni, launched in 2023, was the first model sold in the same form worldwide, and it can connect to Wi-Fi. There are now more than 1,500 characters.

最初のブームが去ったあとも、バンダイは数年ごとに新しい機種を出し続けました。2004年には赤外線でほかの機械と通信できる機種が登場し、2008年にはカラー画面になりました。2023年発売の「Tamagotchi Uni」は世界共通で同じ形で売られた初めての機種で、Wi-Fiにもつながります。キャラクターは今では1500種類以上います。

Total shipments reached 100 million units by the end of July 2025, Bandai Namco said. Overseas markets account for 51 percent of that total. Sales of Tamagotchi merchandise, not counting video games, grew about sevenfold in the five years from 2019.

The company says the toy now attracts nostalgic parents as well as young people who love retro items. Many young fans wear the devices on keychains as fashion accessories. The basic design has stayed the same since 1996, with an egg shape, a small screen, three buttons and no off switch. The 30th anniversary in Japan falls in November 2026.
