Bulgaria started using the euro on January 1, 2026. Before that, people in Bulgaria used their own money, the lev. Now 21 countries in the European Union use the euro.

One euro is worth about 1.96 lev. Money in people's bank accounts changed to euros automatically. In January, people could pay with both kinds of cash. From February 1, only the euro could be used in shops.

Some people worried that shops would raise their prices. To stop this, the government checked the prices of 101 common products every day. Shops also had to show prices in both lev and euros for a year.

People can still change old lev into euros at banks. Many banks did it for free until June 30, 2026. Bulgaria's central bank will change lev into euros with no time limit.

GRAMMAR文法ポイント:助動詞+受け身(can / could be + 過去分詞)

「~されることができる」を表す。本文の only the euro could be used in shops(店ではユーロしか使われることができなかった=ユーロしか使えなかった)がその例。過去のことなので can が could になっている。

  • The stars could be seen clearly last night.昨夜は星がはっきり見えました。
