Bulgaria Becomes the 21st Country to Adopt the Euro

1Bulgaria replaced its national currency, the lev, with the euro on January 1, 2026. It became the 21st member of the European Union to use the shared currency. The European Commission said more than 357 million people now share the euro.

2The conversion rate was fixed at 1.95583 lev to one euro, the same rate the lev had been tied to for years. Bank balances were converted automatically. For the month of January, shoppers could pay in either lev or euro cash, but they usually received their change in euros. On February 1, the euro became the only legal tender.

3One major concern was that businesses might use the switch as a chance to raise prices. To prevent this, Bulgaria's Consumer Protection Commission tracked the prices of 101 frequently purchased products every day during the changeover. It published the results on a special website. Shops were also required to display prices in both currencies from August 8, 2025, to August 8, 2026.

4The European Commission said its latest survey showed strong public support for the euro across the euro area. The Commission also noted that the lev had kept a stable exchange rate for many years.

5People who still have lev at home can exchange it. Commercial banks and some post offices exchanged lev for free until June 30, 2026, and may now charge a fee. The Bulgarian National Bank will exchange lev free of charge with no deadline.

require A to do(Aに~するよう求める)の受け身。 Shops were also required to display prices in both currencies(店は両方の通貨で値段を表示するよう義務づけられた)がその例。
