1A Tamagotchi exhibition opened in Tokyo on January 7, 2026, starting the celebrations for the digital pet's 30th anniversary. Visitors walk in through a giant white egg and can play with past models in a history room.

2Bandai first sold Tamagotchi in Japan on November 23, 1996. The name blends the Japanese words for egg and watch. Owners must feed their pets, care for them when they are sick and clean up after them. A pet can die if it is ignored for too long. The toy sold 10 million units in Japan in its first eight months.

3After the first boom faded, Bandai kept releasing new models every few years. A 2004 version let players connect devices using infrared signals, and color screens arrived in 2008. Tamagotchi Uni, launched in 2023, was the first model sold in the same form worldwide, and it can connect to Wi-Fi. There are now more than 1,500 characters.

4Total shipments reached 100 million units by the end of July 2025, Bandai Namco said. Overseas markets account for 51 percent of that total. Sales of Tamagotchi merchandise, not counting video games, grew about sevenfold in the five years from 2019.

5The company says the toy now attracts nostalgic parents as well as young people who love retro items. Many young fans wear the devices on keychains as fashion accessories. The basic design has stayed the same since 1996, with an egg shape, a small screen, three buttons and no off switch. The 30th anniversary in Japan falls in November 2026.

12026年1月7日、東京でたまごっちの展示が始まり、このデジタルペットの30周年を祝う1年が幕を開けました。来場者は巨大な白いたまごを通って入場し、歴史を紹介する部屋では昔の機種で遊ぶこともできます。

2バンダイは1996年11月23日に、日本でたまごっちを初めて発売しました。名前は、日本語の「たまご」と「ウオッチ」を組み合わせたものです。持ち主は、ペットにごはんをあげ、病気になったら看病し、フンのそうじもしなければなりません。長い間ほうっておくと、ペットは死んでしまうこともあります。発売から8か月で、日本で1000万個が売れました。
