The Catholic Church chose a new pope on May 8, 2025. White smoke rose from a chimney at the Vatican to share the news.

The new pope chose the name Leo XIV. His real name is Robert Francis Prevost, and he was born in Chicago. He is the first pope from the United States.

The pope was chosen by 133 cardinals in the Sistine Chapel. They wrote names on paper and voted again and again. Black smoke means no decision yet, and white smoke means a new pope. Leo XIV was chosen on the second day.

Before he became pope, he worked in Peru for many years. He also studied math at a university in the U.S. In his first speech, he talked about peace to a huge crowd. He is now the leader of more than a billion Catholics.
