Leo XIV: The First Pope from the United States

1Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States was elected pope on May 8, 2025, and took the name Leo XIV. He is the 267th pope and the first from the U.S. The news began with white smoke from a chimney above the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. About an hour later, the official announcement was made at St. Peter's Basilica.

2The election, known as a conclave, followed the death of Pope Francis in April 2025. Behind closed doors, 133 cardinals under the age of 80 wrote their choices on paper ballots. A winner needed a two-thirds majority, which meant at least 89 votes. After each round without a result, the ballots were burned with chemicals that turned the smoke black, while white smoke signaled success.

3Leo XIV has lived and worked in the U.S., Peru, and Italy. Born in Chicago in 1955, he earned a degree in mathematics before joining a Catholic religious order called the Augustinians. He then spent many years in Peru, first as a missionary and later as a bishop, and he even holds Peruvian citizenship. In 2023, he was called to Rome to lead an important Vatican office.

4When he stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, tens of thousands of people were waiting in the square below. Speaking in Italian and Spanish, he focused on peace and dialogue. His chosen name also looks back in history, since the last pope named Leo led the Church from 1878 to 1903.

5Leo XIV was 69 years old when he was elected. He is now the spiritual leader of more than a billion Catholics around the world.

Speaking in Italian and Spanish, he focused on ...(イタリア語とスペイン語で話しながら)や Born in Chicago in 1955, he ...(1955年にシカゴで生まれた彼は)がその例。
