A giant machine in Europe has turned lead into gold, scientists at CERN said in 2025. Long ago, people called alchemists tried to make gold from cheaper metals. They never succeeded, because chemistry cannot change one element into another.
The machine is called the Large Hadron Collider, or LHC. It makes tiny parts of lead atoms fly at almost the speed of light. Sometimes two of them pass very close without hitting each other. This can knock small parts called protons out of the lead.
Lead has 82 protons, and gold has 79. So when lead loses three protons, it becomes gold.
But the amount of gold was very small. From 2015 to 2018, the machine made far less than a billionth of a gram. The gold also broke apart in a tiny part of a second.
Later in 2025, a fusion energy company shared another idea. It said future fusion power plants could turn mercury into gold. This idea has not been tested in a real plant yet.

Physicists at CERN have measured lead turning into gold inside the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the laboratory said in May 2025. The results came from the ALICE experiment and were published in the journal Physical Review C. Medieval alchemists spent centuries trying to make gold from cheaper metals such as lead. Chemistry could never do it, because changing an element requires changing the nucleus at the center of each atom.
In the LHC, lead nuclei travel at 99.999993 percent of the speed of light. When two nuclei pass close to each other without colliding, their powerful electromagnetic fields can knock particles out of them. Lead has 82 protons and gold has 79, so a lead nucleus that loses three protons becomes gold. Special detectors allowed the team to count how often this happened.
At its peak, the process made up to about 89,000 gold nuclei per second. From 2015 to 2018, the LHC produced around 86 billion of them, which together weighed only about 29 trillionths of a gram. The gold nuclei broke apart almost at once inside the machine. Later runs made nearly twice as much, but that is still far too little for even a single ring.
In July 2025, researchers at the company Marathon Fusion proposed a different route to gold. In their plan, fast neutrons from a future fusion power plant would hit a particular type of mercury called mercury-198. The mercury would change into an unstable form that later decays into stable gold. Their computer simulations suggested about two tonnes of gold a year for each gigawatt of heat a plant produces.
The company said gold sales could roughly double a plant's income. However, no fusion power plant is running yet, and the idea has only been tested on computers.
