Should governments regulate artificial intelligence more strictly?
I believe that governments should regulate artificial intelligence more strictly. I have two reasons to support this opinion.
First, without proper regulation, AI could pose serious threats to privacy and civil liberties. For example, facial recognition technology is already being used by some authorities to monitor citizens without their knowledge or consent. In addition, AI-powered algorithms can collect and analyze vast amounts of personal data, which could easily be misused. Stricter regulations would help prevent such violations and protect individuals’ fundamental rights.
Second, AI has the potential to displace millions of workers across various industries, and governments need to prepare for this massive economic disruption. For instance, autonomous vehicles could eventually eliminate jobs for millions of truck drivers and taxi drivers worldwide. If governments implement regulations now, they can require companies to invest in retraining programs and create a smoother transition for affected workers.
For these reasons, I firmly believe that governments should take a much more active role in regulating artificial intelligence before it is too late.
💬 想定Q&A:
Q: Won’t strict regulation slow down technological innovation?(厳しい規制はイノベーションを遅らせませんか?)
A: That’s a valid concern. However, I believe well-designed regulation can actually promote responsible innovation rather than hinder it. Look at the pharmaceutical industry — strict safety regulations haven’t stopped drug development; they’ve made it safer and more trustworthy. The same principle can be applied to AI.(もっともな懸念です。
Can individual actions make a significant difference in combating climate change?
I believe that individual actions can indeed make a significant difference in combating climate change. I have two reasons.
First, consumer behavior directly influences corporate decisions on a massive scale. When millions of individuals choose eco-friendly products, companies are essentially forced to adopt greener practices to remain competitive. For example, the growing demand for electric vehicles has pushed major automakers like Toyota and Volkswagen to invest billions of dollars in EV technology. This shows that collective consumer choices can reshape entire industries.
Second, individual actions create a powerful ripple effect that shapes social norms and public opinion. When people in a community start recycling, using reusable bags, or taking public transportation, it normalizes environmentally conscious behavior for everyone around them. Over time, this cultural shift can lead to stronger public support for ambitious environmental policies and regulations at the government level.
For these reasons, I strongly believe that individual actions, when combined on a large scale, can make a truly meaningful impact on combating climate change.
Should university education be free for all students?
I believe that university education should be free for all students. I have two reasons to support this view.
First, free education would significantly reduce social inequality by giving everyone equal access to higher education regardless of their financial background. Currently, many talented students from low-income families are unable to attend university simply because they cannot afford tuition fees. In countries like Germany and Norway, where tuition-free universities already exist, enrollment among students from disadvantaged backgrounds has increased substantially.
Second, a more educated population benefits the economy as a whole in the long run. When more people can access higher education, it creates a more skilled and innovative workforce, which drives technological advancement and economic growth. This increased productivity ultimately generates more tax revenue, which can be used to fund public services including the education system itself.
For these reasons, I believe that making university education free is both socially just and economically beneficial for society as a whole.
Does social media do more harm than good to society?
I believe that social media does more harm than good to society. I have two reasons.
First, social media platforms are specifically designed to be addictive, and this has had a devastating impact on mental health, particularly among young people. Numerous studies have shown a strong correlation between heavy social media use and increased rates of anxiety, depression, and feelings of loneliness. Teenagers who spend hours scrolling through carefully curated images often develop unrealistic expectations about appearance and lifestyle, leading to serious self-esteem issues.
Second, social media has become one of the most powerful tools for spreading misinformation and disinformation. During elections and public health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, false information was able to spread across platforms far faster than accurate reporting by legitimate news organizations. This led to real-world consequences including vaccine hesitancy, political polarization, and even violence in some cases.
For these reasons, I believe that the negative effects of social media currently far outweigh its benefits, and urgent action is needed to address these problems.
Should governments introduce a universal basic income?
I believe that governments should seriously consider introducing a universal basic income. I have two reasons.
First, as automation and artificial intelligence continue to eliminate traditional jobs at an unprecedented pace, a basic income could serve as an essential safety net for displaced workers. Without such a system, millions of people could fall into poverty during the transition to a more automated economy. Pilot programs in Finland and parts of Canada have already shown that basic income recipients reported lower stress levels and were more likely to seek new employment or start businesses.
Second, a universal basic income could dramatically reduce bureaucratic inefficiency by replacing the complex web of existing welfare programs. Currently, governments spend enormous amounts of money simply administering dozens of different benefit programs. A single universal payment would simplify this system, reduce administrative costs, and ensure that absolutely no one falls through the cracks of the social safety net.
For these reasons, I believe that universal basic income deserves serious consideration as a forward-looking policy option for modern societies.
Is the United Nations still effective in maintaining world peace?
I believe that the United Nations remains an important, though certainly imperfect, institution for maintaining world peace. I have two reasons.
First, the UN provides a unique and irreplaceable forum for dialogue between nations, including those that are in conflict with each other. Even when disputes cannot be resolved immediately, the simple ability to communicate at the negotiating table prevents situations from escalating into full-scale wars. Without the UN, many regional disputes over the past several decades would likely have turned into much larger and more devastating conflicts.
Second, UN peacekeeping operations, despite their well-documented limitations, have been crucial in stabilizing post-conflict regions around the world. Operations in countries like Sierra Leone, East Timor, and Mozambique have successfully helped maintain ceasefires, protect civilians, and support the transition to democratic governance. These achievements, though often overlooked, have saved countless lives.
For these reasons, while the UN certainly needs significant reform to address its structural weaknesses, I believe it still plays a vital and irreplaceable role in promoting global peace and stability.
Should genetic engineering be used to eliminate hereditary diseases?
I believe that genetic engineering should be used to eliminate hereditary diseases, provided that it is done under strict ethical oversight. I have two reasons.
First, millions of people worldwide suffer from genetic conditions that cause immense pain and significantly shorten their lives. If we have the scientific capability to prevent such suffering, I believe we have a moral obligation to use it. Diseases like sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, and Huntington’s disease could potentially be eradicated through gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR. The prospect of freeing future generations from these devastating conditions is simply too important to ignore.
Second, preventing hereditary diseases through genetic engineering could dramatically reduce healthcare costs in the long run, benefiting society as a whole. Treating genetic disorders is extremely expensive — patients often require lifelong medical care, specialized medications, and frequent hospitalizations. By addressing these conditions at the genetic level before birth, we could free up enormous medical resources that could be redirected to other pressing health challenges.
For these reasons, I believe genetic engineering should be cautiously but actively embraced for the specific purpose of eliminating hereditary diseases.
Should companies be required to have gender quotas for leadership positions?
I believe that gender quotas for leadership positions are a necessary step toward achieving true workplace equality. I have two reasons.
First, despite decades of gradual progress, women remain significantly underrepresented in corporate leadership positions worldwide. In Japan, for example, the percentage of female executives remains among the lowest in all developed nations, hovering around just fifteen percent. Voluntary efforts by companies have clearly been insufficient to close this gap within a reasonable timeframe. Gender quotas, while controversial, can accelerate the pace of change that is otherwise happening far too slowly to achieve meaningful equality.
Second, extensive research consistently demonstrates that diverse leadership teams produce better business outcomes. Companies with more women in senior management positions tend to be more innovative, make more balanced decisions, and achieve stronger financial performance. In Norway, where board-level gender quotas were introduced over a decade ago, companies have reported improvements in both governance quality and overall competitiveness.
For these reasons, I support the implementation of gender quotas as a practical and necessary tool for achieving greater equality in the workplace.
Can Japan overcome its declining birth rate?
Unfortunately, I believe it will be extremely difficult for Japan to fully reverse its declining birth rate. I have two reasons for this view.
First, the root causes of Japan’s declining birth rate — such as extremely long working hours, prohibitively high childcare costs, and deeply entrenched traditional gender roles — are all profoundly structural problems that cannot be fixed with quick policy solutions. While the Japanese government has introduced various financial support measures for families over the years, including childcare subsidies and parental leave policies, these efforts have so far failed to produce any significant increase in the birth rate. The problems are simply too deep-rooted.
Second, changing attitudes toward marriage and parenthood among younger generations make a rapid demographic recovery extremely unlikely. A growing number of young Japanese people now prioritize their careers, personal freedom, and financial independence over starting a family. This is not unique to Japan — it is a widespread trend across all developed nations — and history has shown that it is exceptionally difficult to reverse such fundamental shifts in values through government policy alone.
For these reasons, I believe Japan should focus more on adapting its society and economy to function effectively with a smaller population, rather than relying solely on efforts to increase the birth rate.
Should Japan accept more immigrants to address its labor shortage?
I believe that Japan should accept more immigrants to address its growing labor shortage. I have two reasons.
First, Japan’s working-age population is shrinking at an alarming rate, and this demographic crisis is already causing serious problems in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, construction, and elderly care. Many hospitals in rural areas are struggling to find enough nurses and caregivers, and some farms have been forced to reduce production due to a lack of workers. Without a significant influx of foreign workers, these essential industries will face even more severe staffing shortages in the coming years, directly threatening the quality of life for all Japanese citizens.
Second, immigrants bring diverse perspectives, skills, and entrepreneurial energy that can stimulate innovation and economic growth. Countries like Canada and Australia have demonstrated through decades of experience that well-managed immigration policies can significantly boost economic prosperity while maintaining social cohesion. Japan could learn from these successful models and develop its own comprehensive immigration framework that balances economic needs with cultural integration.
For these reasons, I strongly believe that Japan should develop a more open, structured, and welcoming immigration policy to secure its economic future.
