Muzio Clementi was born in Rome on 23 January 1752. His father was a silversmith. He showed a gift for the keyboard from an early age and became a church organist in his early teens. At about fourteen, a wealthy Englishman, Peter Beckford, who was travelling in Rome, was so impressed by his playing that he took the boy to his estate in England under a seven-year agreement.
At Beckford's estate in Dorset, in southern England, Clementi spent seven years doing almost nothing but practising and studying. He then moved to London, where he worked as a harpsichordist and conductor, and became known as a master of the new instrument, the piano. From 1780 he toured Europe, and on Christmas Eve 1781 he took part in a piano contest with Mozart in Vienna.
In London Clementi ran a piano factory and a music publishing business with great success. In 1807 he signed a contract with Beethoven in Vienna and won the right to publish his works in England. That same year his factory was destroyed by fire, a heavy blow, but he rebuilt his business. He also wrote many studies and sonatinas — small sonatas — for piano students.
Between 1817 and 1826 Clementi published Gradus ad Parnassum ('Steps to Parnassus'), a collection of 100 studies. He died in Evesham, England, on 10 March 1832, aged 80, and was buried in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey in London. In Japan, his Sonatinas Op. 36, included in the popular 'Sonatina Album', are standard pieces for piano students.
Muzio Clementi was born in Rome in 1752. A rich Englishman took him to England. There he practised every day for seven years. He played the piano against Mozart! He also made pianos and sold music. Many piano students play his sonatinas.

On 24 December 1781, Clementi and Mozart competed at the imperial court in Vienna before Emperor Joseph II. They each improvised and sight-read music. The contest is said to have ended in a draw.
After the contest, Mozart wrote to his father in January 1782 that Clementi played well but had 'not a farthing's worth of taste or feeling — in short, he is a mere mechanicus'. Clementi, on the other hand, later recalled, according to his pupil Ludwig Berger, that he had never heard anyone play with such spirit and grace.
The theme of the Sonata in B flat that Clementi played at the contest is strikingly similar to a theme in the overture to Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, written ten years later. When Clementi later published the sonata, he made a point of adding a note saying he had played it before Mozart.
The Englishman Peter Beckford took the fourteen-year-old Clementi from his father in Rome under a seven-year agreement. Beckford himself later wrote that he had 'bought' the boy from his father for seven years. At the estate, Clementi practised for hours every day, laying the foundation for his career as a great pianist.
Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum was used by piano students for generations. Debussy named the first piece of his Children's Corner 'Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum', a humorous nod to such finger exercises. It is often said to show a child getting bored with dull practice.
When Clementi died in Evesham in 1832, he was buried in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey in London, the resting place of English kings and great figures. It shows how deeply this Italian-born musician was respected in Britain.
