A NASA telescope planned for two years has stopped working after nearly 22 years. The telescope is called Swift. It looked into space for the last time on October 20. NASA shared the news on October 23.
Swift went into space in November 2004. It was built to study gamma-ray bursts. These are the strongest kind of explosion in the universe. Swift could turn toward a new burst in about one minute.
Swift saw more than 2,000 of these bursts. It also watched more than 1,400 exploding stars. Scientists used its data in about 7,000 papers.
But Swift was slowly falling toward Earth. Air pushed against it like a brake on a bike. Strong activity on the sun made Earth's air spread higher and push even harder.
A company in Arizona built a spacecraft to catch Swift and lift it higher. But the spacecraft began spinning out of control. It used up its fuel, and the rescue failed. NASA expects Swift to fall into the atmosphere within a few weeks.

NASA has ended the science mission of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a space telescope designed to work for only two years. Swift made its final observation on October 20, nearly 22 years after it was launched. The agency expects the telescope to reenter Earth's atmosphere in the coming weeks.
Swift was launched on November 20, 2004. It was originally built to study gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful type of explosion in the universe. When a new burst appeared, Swift could point its telescopes at it in about a minute. NASA said the mission lasted over ten times as long as first planned.
Swift observed more than 2,000 gamma-ray bursts and more than 1,400 supernovae, or exploding stars. Its data has been used in about 7,000 scientific papers. In May 2005, it detected the afterglow of a burst that lasted just 0.03 seconds. No one had seen an afterglow from such a short burst before. The finding supported the idea that short bursts come from neutron stars crashing into each other.
Swift came down because of atmospheric drag, the push of air against a moving object. The sun's activity rises and falls in an 11-year cycle, and it peaked in 2024. Strong solar activity made Earth's atmosphere expand, which increased Swift's drag. Below about 275 kilometers, the drag became too strong for Swift to keep its telescopes pointed at targets.
Katalyst Space Technologies, a company based in Arizona, built a spacecraft called LINK in about nine months. LINK was supposed to grab Swift and raise it to a higher orbit. After its launch in July, however, LINK went into an uncontrolled spin. Getting it back under control used up the fuel it needed, and the rescue was abandoned.
Some parts of Swift may survive reentry. The space tracking company LeoLabs said the chance of serious damage or injury is very small. NASA has made nearly 22 years of Swift data public, including more than 1.5 million images.
