A Two-Year Telescope Worked for Nearly 22 Years
1A NASA telescope planned for two years has stopped working after nearly 22 years. The telescope is called Swift. It looked into space for the last time on October 20. NASA shared the news on October 23.
2Swift went into space in November 2004. It was built to study gamma-ray bursts. These are the strongest kind of explosion in the universe. Swift could turn toward a new burst in about one minute.
3Swift saw more than 2,000 of these bursts. It also watched more than 1,400 exploding stars. Scientists used its data in about 7,000 papers.
4But Swift was slowly falling toward Earth. Air pushed against it like a brake on a bike. Strong activity on the sun made Earth's air spread higher and push even harder.
5A company in Arizona built a spacecraft to catch Swift and lift it higher. But the spacecraft began spinning out of control. It used up its fuel, and the rescue failed. NASA expects Swift to fall into the atmosphere within a few weeks.

It was built to study gamma-ray bursts.(ガンマ線バーストを調べるために作られた)がその例。
