NASA's Swift Ends Its Hunt for Cosmic Explosions
1NASA has ended the science mission of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a space telescope designed to work for only two years. Swift made its final observation on October 20, nearly 22 years after it was launched. The agency expects the telescope to reenter Earth's atmosphere in the coming weeks.
2Swift was launched on November 20, 2004. It was originally built to study gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful type of explosion in the universe. When a new burst appeared, Swift could point its telescopes at it in about a minute. NASA said the mission lasted over ten times as long as first planned.
3Swift observed more than 2,000 gamma-ray bursts and more than 1,400 supernovae, or exploding stars. Its data has been used in about 7,000 scientific papers. In May 2005, it detected the afterglow of a burst that lasted just 0.03 seconds. No one had seen an afterglow from such a short burst before. The finding supported the idea that short bursts come from neutron stars crashing into each other.
4Swift came down because of atmospheric drag, the push of air against a moving object. The sun's activity rises and falls in an 11-year cycle, and it peaked in 2024. Strong solar activity made Earth's atmosphere expand, which increased Swift's drag. Below about 275 kilometers, the drag became too strong for Swift to keep its telescopes pointed at targets.
5Katalyst Space Technologies, a company based in Arizona, built a spacecraft called LINK in about nine months. LINK was supposed to grab Swift and raise it to a higher orbit. After its launch in July, however, LINK went into an uncontrolled spin. Getting it back under control used up the fuel it needed, and the rescue was abandoned.
6Some parts of Swift may survive reentry. The space tracking company LeoLabs said the chance of serious damage or injury is very small. NASA has made nearly 22 years of Swift data public, including more than 1.5 million images.

文法ポイント:too ~ for 人 to …(~すぎて人は…
本文の the drag became too strong for Swift to keep its telescopes pointed at targets は「抵抗が強すぎて、スウィフトは望遠鏡を目標に向け続けられなくなった」。
