Heavy users of short videos tend to have more trouble paying attention, a large study says. Researchers at Griffith University in Australia did the study.
Short videos are popular on apps like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. On these apps, users can scroll from one video to the next without end.
The team did not do a new experiment. Instead, they put together the results of 71 earlier studies. These studies included more than 98,000 people, both young people and adults.
Watching more short videos was linked to weaker attention and self-control. It was also linked to more stress and anxiety. But it was not linked to how people felt about their bodies.
The study shows a link, but it does not show a cause. For example, anxious people may watch more videos to feel better. The researchers want future studies to follow people for a long time.

Heavier use of short-form video apps such as TikTok is linked to poorer attention and self-control, a large review of earlier research has found. A team led by Lan Nguyen at Griffith University in Australia published the review in the journal Psychological Bulletin in 2025.
Short-form videos were popularized by TikTok and the Chinese app Douyin, and similar features such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts followed. The apps let users scroll from one clip to the next without end, a design that has raised concerns about addiction.
The researchers did not run a new experiment. Instead, they carried out a meta-analysis, a method that combines the results of many earlier studies. They gathered data from 71 studies with a total of 98,299 participants, including both young people and adults.
Heavier use was linked to poorer cognition, or thinking skills, and the researchers described the link as moderate. The strongest links were with attention and inhibitory control, the ability to stop yourself from acting on an impulse. Heavier use was also linked to poorer mental health, especially stress and anxiety, but this link was weaker. The results were similar for young people and adults and across different apps. Short-form video use was not linked to body image or self-esteem.
The findings show an association, not cause and effect. The authors noted that most of the studies measured people at only one point in time. People who already have anxiety or attention problems may simply use the apps more. Many studies also relied on people's own reports of how much they watched.
The team said future studies should follow people over time to test whether cutting back on short videos improves their health.
