Short-Video Habits Linked to Poorer Attention in Large Review

1Heavier use of short-form video apps such as TikTok is linked to poorer attention and self-control, a large review of earlier research has found. A team led by Lan Nguyen at Griffith University in Australia published the review in the journal Psychological Bulletin in 2025.

2Short-form videos were popularized by TikTok and the Chinese app Douyin, and similar features such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts followed. The apps let users scroll from one clip to the next without end, a design that has raised concerns about addiction.

3The researchers did not run a new experiment. Instead, they carried out a meta-analysis, a method that combines the results of many earlier studies. They gathered data from 71 studies with a total of 98,299 participants, including both young people and adults.

4Heavier use was linked to poorer cognition, or thinking skills, and the researchers described the link as moderate. The strongest links were with attention and inhibitory control, the ability to stop yourself from acting on an impulse. Heavier use was also linked to poorer mental health, especially stress and anxiety, but this link was weaker. The results were similar for young people and adults and across different apps. Short-form video use was not linked to body image or self-esteem.

5The findings show an association, not cause and effect. The authors noted that most of the studies measured people at only one point in time. People who already have anxiety or attention problems may simply use the apps more. Many studies also relied on people's own reports of how much they watched.

6The team said future studies should follow people over time to test whether cutting back on short videos improves their health.

本文の a meta-analysis, a method that combines the results of many earlier studies は「メタ分析、つまり多くの過去の研究の結果をまとめる方法」。inhibitory control, the ability to stop yourself from acting on an impulse
