Now a strong El Niño is growing in the Pacific Ocean. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said this on October 8. El Niño is a warming of the sea in the central and eastern Pacific. It can bring more droughts and floods to different parts of the world.
The WMO said this El Niño could be one of the strongest since at least 1950. It will probably be strongest around December. A strong El Niño often brings one of the hottest years, as in 2024.

A strong El Niño is developing in the Pacific Ocean and could become one of the most powerful since at least 1950, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on October 8. The warning comes after the hottest August ever recorded around the world.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union's climate monitoring service, said the global average air temperature in August was 16.96 degrees Celsius. That was 1.65 degrees higher than the estimated level before the Industrial Revolution. It tied with July 2023 as the hottest month on record. The summer from June to August also tied with 2024 as the warmest on record, and western Europe had its warmest summer ever.
The oceans set records as well. On August 24 and 25, the daily average sea surface temperature outside the polar regions reached 21.11 degrees Celsius, the highest ever measured. According to the US agency NOAA, all ten of the warmest Augusts have occurred since 2016.
El Niño is a warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific that affects weather patterns worldwide. In a key area of the Pacific, the sea was 1.6 degrees warmer than normal in June and 2.5 degrees warmer in August. Forecasters expect the difference to reach about 3.7 degrees from October to December, which would be the highest since observations began. The previous record, 2.6 degrees, was set in the winter of 2015 to 2016.
The WMO said El Niño is expected to peak around December and is almost certain to last through February 2027. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said a strong El Niño often leads to one of the hottest years on record, as it did in 2024. The WMO will give a climate update at the COP31 climate talks in Antalya, Turkey, in November.
