インスタの写真から新種発見！葉が2メートルのオオオニバスの仲間、コロンビアで

Scientists have named a new kind of giant water lily from Colombia, in South America. Its round leaves can grow up to 2 meters across. The new species is called Victoria colombiana.

科学者たちが、南アメリカのコロンビアで見つかった巨大なスイレンの新しい種類に名前をつけました。その丸い葉は、直径2メートルにもなります。この新種は、ビクトリア・コロンビアナと名づけられました。

The story started with a photo on Instagram. A plant grower from the United States posted pictures of the plant. A plant expert in London saw them and thought the plant looked different. Giant water lilies were not known to grow in that area.

話の始まりは、インスタグラムの1枚の写真でした。アメリカの植物を育てる人が、その植物の写真を投稿したのです。ロンドンの植物の専門家がそれを見て、ほかとちがう植物だと思いました。その地域に巨大なスイレンが生えているとは、知られていなかったからです。

The team checked satellite pictures and found the plants from space. Then they traveled to Colombia. Just before their flight home, a local boat driver took them to more plants.

チームは人工衛星の写真を調べ、宇宙からその植物を見つけました。それから、コロンビアへ向かいました。帰りの飛行機に乗る直前、地元のボートの運転手が、もっと多くの株がある場所へ連れて行ってくれました。

The scientists think only 30 to 50 plants are left in the wild. They say the plant is in danger of dying out. They plan to collect seeds and grow the plant in Colombia's capital, Bogota.

Botanists have described a new species of giant water lily from eastern Colombia, and it was first spotted in an Instagram post. The plant, named Victoria colombiana, has floating leaves that can reach 2 meters across. The study was published on October 7 in the journal Phytotaxa.

Several years ago, a plant nursery owner in the United States posted photos from a trip to the Inírida River area. He believed the plant was the well-known Amazon water lily. Carlos Magdalena, a horticulturist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, suspected otherwise, because no giant water lilies were known from that part of the Orinoco River basin.

Satellite images confirmed that the large plants were growing there, and the authors noted that the species can be seen from space. After nearly two years of planning, a team worked with a botanical garden in Bogota and local Indigenous communities. At first, they found only two plants without flowers. Shortly before their flight home, a local boatman led them to five more plants, one of them in bloom.

The team estimates that only 30 to 50 plants survive in the wild. The researchers are working toward listing the species as Critically Endangered, the highest risk category for wild species. A late and intense rainy season recently left the plants struggling with high water.

チームは、野生で生き残っているのは30〜50株だけだと見ています。研究者たちは、この種を野生の生き物で最も危険度の高い「絶滅危惧IA類（近絶滅種）」に指定するよう準備を進めています。最近は、おそくて激しい雨季のために水位が高くなり、株が弱っています。

Because the seeds have no known animal carriers, they spread mainly with river water. The team plans to collect seeds and grow plants in Bogota as a backup population.
