ロボタクシーがロンドンへ！ウーバーと中国企業が無人タクシーの試験を発表

More self-driving taxis are coming to London. On October 8, Uber and a Chinese company, Pony.ai, announced a plan for robotaxis there. They will start testing the cars in the coming weeks.

ロンドンに、自動運転のタクシーがさらにやって来ます。10月8日、ウーバーと中国の会社ポニー・エーアイが、ロンドンでのロボタクシーの計画を発表しました。数週間のうちに車のテストを始めます。

Some self-driving cars already carry people in London. Uber and a London company called Wayve started rides on September 2. It was the first time people in the UK could ride in them.

ロンドンでは、すでに人を乗せている自動運転の車もあります。ウーバーと、ロンドンのウェイブという会社が、9月2日に乗車サービスを始めました。イギリスの人がこうした車に乗れるのは、これが初めてでした。

These cars still have a trained driver inside. The driver watches over each trip. Riders pay the same price as a normal ride.

Riders can also say no to a self-driving car. Then they can choose a car with a human driver instead. More than 140,000 people in London have signed up for the rides.

Uber and the Chinese self-driving company Pony.ai announced on October 8 that they plan to bring robotaxis to London. The companies said they would begin testing Pony.ai's seventh-generation vehicles in the city within weeks. The two firms already work together in Europe and the Middle East.

The plan follows a first for the United Kingdom. On September 2, Uber and Wayve, a self-driving startup founded in London, launched autonomous rides that members of the public can book. Uber said it was the first time such trips had been available to the public in the country. The service uses electric Ford Mustang Mach-E cars and started with a small number of vehicles.

For now, a trained driver sits behind the wheel and oversees every trip. Riders pay no extra cost, and they can turn down a self-driving car and switch to a human driver. Uber said more than 140,000 Londoners had signed up for the rides.

Uber is also an investor in Wayve. In February 2026, Wayve raised $1.2 billion from backers including Uber and the chipmaker Nvidia. Meanwhile, the British government is still writing its rules for self-driving cars. Its Department for Transport opened applications for a pilot program in May 2026 and plans to use the results to shape those rules.

Wayve has trained its software on London roads since 2018. Its system learns from driving data instead of relying on detailed maps or hand-written rules. Fully driverless rides in London will come later, and the companies have not given a date.
