1Earth had its hottest August on record this year, European climate scientists said. The average air temperature around the world was 16.96 degrees Celsius. That tied with July 2023 as the hottest month ever measured.

2The oceans were very warm, too. In late August, the sea surface reached its highest temperature ever recorded.

3Now a strong El Niño is growing in the Pacific Ocean. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said this on October 8. El Niño is a warming of the sea in the central and eastern Pacific. It can bring more droughts and floods to different parts of the world.

4The WMO said this El Niño could be one of the strongest since at least 1950. It will probably be strongest around December. A strong El Niño often brings one of the hottest years, as in 2024.

全文訳

1今年の8月は、記録が残る中で地球がいちばん暑い8月だったと、ヨーロッパの気候の科学者たちが発表しました。世界の平均気温は16.96度でした。これは2023年7月と並んで、測った中でいちばん暑い月の記録です。

2海もとても温かくなっていました。8月の終わりには、海面の水温が、記録が残る中で最も高くなりました。

3そしていま、太平洋で強いエルニーニョ現象が発達しています。世界気象機関（WMO）が10月8日に発表しました。エルニーニョ現象とは、太平洋の真ん中から東の海が温かくなることです。エルニーニョ現象は、世界のいろいろな場所で、日照りや洪水を増やすことがあります。

4WMOは、今回のエルニーニョ現象が、少なくとも1950年以降で最も強いものの1つになるかもしれないと言いました。いちばん強くなるのは、12月ごろになりそうです。強いエルニーニョ現象のあとは、2024年のように、記録的に暑い年になることがよくあります。

文法ポイント：最上級（the + -est）と on record / ever

「いちばん～な」は the + 形容詞の -est。on record（記録の中で）や ever（これまでで）をつけると「記録が残る中で最も～」という意味になる。本文の its hottest August on record や the hottest month ever measured がその例。
