Climate change is bringing more very hot days to cacao farms in West Africa, a study found. Chocolate is made from the beans of cacao trees. About 70 percent of the world's cacao comes from four West African countries.
Temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius are too hot for the trees. The study looked at 44 areas where cacao grows. In Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire, climate change added at least three weeks of these hot days each year.
Too much heat can mean fewer and poorer beans. Bad harvests pushed cocoa prices to record highs. For many years, a ton of cocoa cost about 2,000 to 3,000 dollars. In December 2024, the price went over 12,500 dollars.
Rain and diseases carried by insects can also hurt the trees, the scientists said. A Swiss chocolate maker said it would raise its prices again in 2025.

Climate change has added weeks of harmful heat to the West African regions that grow most of the world's cacao, a study released on February 12, 2025, found. The analysis was carried out by Climate Central, a research group based in the United States. It covered 44 cacao-growing areas in Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon and Nigeria, which together produce about 70 percent of the world's cacao.
The researchers focused on days above 32 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the ideal range for cacao trees. They compared real temperature records with computer models of a world without climate change. Over the past decade, climate change added at least three weeks of such days each year in Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, the two largest producers. These extra hot days came during the main growing season, from October to March. Cameroon gained just over two extra weeks a year, and Nigeria gained more than one.
In 2024, the hottest year on record, human-caused warming added about six weeks of these days in 71 percent of the areas studied. Too much heat can reduce both the amount and the quality of the harvest. The researchers noted that rainfall and diseases spread by insects also affect the trees.
Poor harvests have pushed cocoa prices sharply higher since late 2023. For decades, a tonne of cocoa in New York mostly traded between 2,000 and 3,000 dollars. In mid-December 2024, the price peaked at more than 12,500 dollars. The price was still above 10,000 dollars when the study came out. Swiss chocolate maker Lindt said it would raise its prices again in 2025.
