Students at schools with phone bans did not have better grades or mental health, a study found. Researchers at the University of Birmingham in the UK did the study.
They studied 1,227 students aged 12 to 15 at 30 schools in England. Twenty of the schools did not let students use phones during the school day. The other 10 schools allowed phones at some times, such as lunch.
Students at schools with bans used their phones about 40 minutes less at school. But there was no clear difference in total phone time on school days or weekends. There was also no clear difference in sleep, exercise, or grades in English and math.
However, students who spent more time on phones and social media often slept worse and had lower grades. This shows a link, but it does not prove that phones cause these problems.
The lead researcher said the team was not against phone bans. But she said bans alone are not enough to reduce the harm from phones.

Banning smartphones during the school day was not linked to better mental health or grades among teenagers in England, a University of Birmingham study has found. The study appeared in the journal The Lancet Regional Health Europe in February 2025. Lead author Victoria Goodyear said it was the first study in the world to look at the effects of school phone policies.
The researchers collected data from 1,227 students aged 12 to 15 at 30 secondary schools between November 2022 and November 2023. Twenty of the schools banned recreational phone use for the entire school day. The other 10 allowed phones at times such as breaks and lunch. Students filled out surveys on their wellbeing, anxiety and depression, and many wore wrist devices that tracked their sleep and physical activity. Teachers reported how each student was doing in English and math and how they behaved in class.
Students at schools with bans spent about 40 minutes less on their phones and about 30 minutes less on social media during school hours. However, there was no clear difference in their total phone and social media time on weekdays or weekends. The two groups also showed no clear differences in wellbeing, anxiety, depression, sleep, physical activity, grades or classroom behavior.
Across all 30 schools, students who spent more time on phones and social media tended to have lower wellbeing, poorer sleep, less physical activity and lower grades. They also tended to be more disruptive in class. Because the study looked at students at one point in time, it cannot show cause and effect, and the authors noted that the link could also run the other way.
Goodyear said the team was not against phone bans in schools. But she said a ban on its own does not do enough to reduce the harms of heavy phone use, and that phone use outside school also needs attention. The authors concluded that current school phone rules need further work.
