The Day the Torch Came to Tokyo

On October 10, 1964, a young runner carried a torch into a huge stadium in Tokyo. His name was Yoshinori Sakai, and he was a college student. He was born in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the day of the atomic bomb. When he lit the Olympic flame, the crowd in the stadium cheered. It was the first Olympic Games in Asia.

1964年10月10日、ひとりの若いランナーが、東京の大きな競技場にトーチを運び入れました。彼の名前は坂井義則さん。大学生でした。彼は1945年8月6日、原爆が落とされたその日に広島で生まれました。彼が聖火をともすと、競技場の観客から大きな歓声が上がりました。それはアジアで初めてのオリンピックでした。

Two years later, Japan made October 10 a national holiday to remember that day. It was called Taiiku no Hi, or Health and Sports Day. Taiiku means physical education, like the PE class at school. In 2000, the holiday moved to the second Monday of October. So now most people enjoy a three-day weekend.

2年後、日本はその日を記念して、10月10日を国民の祝日にしました。その名前は「体育の日」、英語では Health and Sports Day でした。「体育」は physical education、つまり学校の体育の授業と同じ言葉です。2000年、この祝日は10月の第2月曜日に移りました。そのおかげで、今ではたいていの人が3連休を楽しめます。

In 2020, the holiday got a new name, Sports no Hi, or Sports Day. Many people felt that the word sports sounds more fun and free than PE. The law now says the day is for enjoying sports and respecting other people. That year, Tokyo planned to host the Olympics again, so the holiday moved to July 24. But the Games were delayed for one year, and that October had no holiday at all!

2020年、この祝日は「スポーツの日」という新しい名前になりました。「スポーツ」という言葉のほうが「体育」より楽しくて自由に聞こえる、と感じる人が多かったのです。今の法律では、この日はスポーツを楽しみ、ほかの人を大切にする日だとされています。その年、東京ではもう一度オリンピックが開かれる予定だったので、祝日は7月24日に移されました。ところが大会は1年延期になり、その年の10月には祝日が1日もありませんでした!

How do people spend the day? In October, many schools and towns hold an undokai, a sports festival. Children run relays, play tug of war, and throw small balls into a high basket. Families sit on picnic mats and share big boxes of lunch. Some cities also open their gyms and pools for free.

人々はこの日をどう過ごすのでしょう。10月には、多くの学校や町で運動会(スポーツのお祭り)が開かれます。子どもたちはリレーを走り、綱引きをし、高いかごに小さな玉を投げ入れます。家族はレジャーシートに座って、大きなお弁当をいっしょに食べます。体育館やプールを無料で開放する市もあります。

Sports Day is a good day to try something new. You do not need to be fast or strong. You can take a walk, ride a bike, or play catch with a friend. Just remember the simple rule in the law. Have fun, and be kind to others.

スポーツの日は、何か新しいことを試すのにいい日です。速くなくても、強くなくてもかまいません。散歩をしても、自転車に乗っても、友だちとキャッチボールをしてもいいのです。法律にあるシンプルなルールを覚えておきましょう。楽しむこと、そしてほかの人にやさしくすること。

From Physical Education to Sports: What a Name Can Change

194 words

When Japan created Health and Sports Day in 1966, the Japanese name used the word taiiku, which is usually translated as physical education. The word carries a long history. In 1885, Mori Arinori, Japan's first Minister of Education, encouraged group exercises in schools, and sports meets became a public display of discipline and teamwork. For many people, taiiku still suggests lessons, rules, and a teacher with a whistle.

1966年に日本が「体育の日」をつくったとき、日本語の名前には「体育」という言葉が使われていました。普通 physical education と訳される言葉です。この言葉には長い歴史があります。1885年、日本の初代文部大臣・森有礼は学校での集団の体操を奨励し、運動会は規律とチームワークを人々に見せる場になりました。多くの人にとって「体育」は今でも、授業や規則、笛を持った先生を思い起こさせる言葉です。

The English word sport has a very different background. It comes from disport, an old word meaning to amuse yourself, and it goes back to a Latin idea of carrying your mind away from work. When the holiday was renamed Sports Day in 2020, its official purpose was also rewritten. The law now speaks of enjoying sports and building a spirit of respect for others, rather than simply strengthening the body.

英語の sport は、まったく違う成り立ちをもっています。楽しむことを意味する古い言葉 disport から来ていて、仕事から心を運び去るというラテン語の考えにさかのぼります。2020年に祝日が「スポーツの日」に改称されたとき、法律上の目的も書き直されました。今の法律は、ただ体を鍛えることよりも、スポーツを楽しむことと、他者を尊重する精神を育てることを語っています。

Some critics say a new name changes nothing if school sports remain strict and competitive. Others argue that words shape expectations, and that a holiday about joy and respect could slowly change how people think about exercise. Either way, the debate shows that even a holiday name can carry a whole philosophy of the body.

学校のスポーツが厳しく競争的なままなら、名前を変えても何も変わらない、と批判する人もいます。一方で、言葉は人の期待をつくるものであり、喜びと尊重のための祝日は、運動についての人々の考え方を少しずつ変えうる、と考える人もいます。いずれにしても、この議論は、祝日の名前ひとつにも、体についての考え方がまるごと込められうることを示しています。
