2つの立場で読む：同じ日のちがう物語
🎯 1つの出来事を2つの立場から英語で説明し、相手の立場を言いかえる力をつける。
- 1492年の航海、1891年のニューオーリンズ事件、1992年のバークレーを年表にする。
- 半分の班は「イタリア系アメリカ人」、半分は「先住民」の立場で、For us, this day means ... を3文書く。
- 相手の班の意見を You think that ... because ... の形で言いかえてから、自分の意見を述べる。
- 最後に、両方を尊重する祝日の名前やイベントを英語で提案する。

英語ページの会話を聞かせ、Why does one day have two names? と問いかける。Aoi の So it depends on who tells the story. という一言を板書し、今日のテーマにする。

本文を読み、年表を作らせる。1492年 コロンブスがカリブ海の島に上陸（日本を目指していた）、1971年 10月の第2月曜日が国の祝日に、1992年 到着500年の年にバークレー市が Indigenous Peoples' Day と名づけた。1891年は記事の解説から、ニューオーリンズでイタリア系移民11人が暴徒に殺された事件として先生が補足する。

クラスの半分の班に Italian Americans、半分に Indigenous peoples の立場カードをわたす。本文の第3段落・第4段落を根拠に、For us, this day means ... で始まる3文を書かせる。B5 の国比べで、ほかの国では同じ日をどう呼んでいるかも参考にさせる。

違う立場の班どうしでペアになり、相手の意見を You think that ... because ... で言いかえてから、自分たちの意見を述べさせる。言いかえが正しいか、相手に Yes, that's right. / Not exactly. で確認させる。2回相手を変えて行う。

両方の立場を尊重できる祝日の名前やイベントを、班で英語で提案させる。各班1つずつ発表し、本文の最後の問い Which name would you choose? に各自が理由つきで1文答えて提出する。

コロンブスと「平らな地球」のファクトチェック
🎯 よくある誤解を資料で確かめ、True / False と理由を英語で言う。
- 「コロンブスが最初に見つけた」「当時の人は地球が平らだと思っていた」など3つの文を配る。
- ペアで True / False を予想する。
- 答え合わせ（先住民、1021年のバイキング、地球の大きさの論争）をし、It's false because ... で理由を言う。
- コロンブスが目指した国が日本だったことを紹介し、感想を1文書く。

世界地図でスペインからカリブ海までの航路を示し、1492年にコロンブスが3隻の船で西へ向かったことを紹介する。「コロンブスについて、みんなが信じている話は本当？」と投げかける。

3つの文のカードを配り、ペアで True / False を予想させる。予想の理由を日本語でもよいので話し合わせる。

資料で答え合わせをする。①は False：すでに何百万人もの人が住んでいた。ヨーロッパ人でも1021年にバイキングがカナダにいた。②は False：学者の多くは地球が丸いと知っていて、本当の論争は地球の大きさだった。③は True：コロンブスはアジアを目指し、日本を見つけたいと思っていた。It's false because ... の形で理由を言わせる。

コロンブスが目指した国が日本だったことにもう一度ふれ、感想を英語で1文書かせる（I was surprised that ... など）。何人かに読んでもらう。時間があれば基本セット p.2 の True / False に取り組ませる。
