Every spring, parks in Japan turn pink. Thousands of cherry trees bloom at almost the same time. People spread blue sheets under the trees and have picnics with family, friends, and coworkers. This is called hanami, or flower viewing. Some people even come back at night to see the flowers under paper lanterns.

Hanami is a very old custom. But at first, people looked at plum flowers, not cherry blossoms. In 812, an emperor held a party under cherry trees in Kyoto. After that, cherry blossoms became the most loved flower in Japan. Later, in the 1700s, a shogun planted cherry trees in Edo so that ordinary people could enjoy them too.

Most cherry trees in Japan today are a kind called Somei-yoshino. All of them came from one single tree. Gardeners copied it again and again by joining its branches to other trees. That is why the trees in one city bloom together and fall together.

The blossoms move north like a wave. They open in Okinawa in January and in northern Hokkaido in May. In Tokyo, the best time is usually late March or early April. In 2026, the trees in Tokyo reached full bloom on March 28. The weather agency watches special sample trees and tells everyone when they open.

The flowers last only about a week before the petals fall like pink snow. So people stop, look up, and enjoy the moment. As an old saying goes, some people still like the dumplings more than the flowers.

Cherry Trees as Diplomacy: The Gift That Was Burned

B1–B2

194 words

The cherry trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., are a famous symbol of spring in the American capital, yet their story began with a failure. In 1909, Tokyo pledged 2,000 trees, but when they arrived, inspectors from the Department of Agriculture found insects and disease. In January 1910, with President Taft's approval, every tree was burned.

What could have become a diplomatic embarrassment turned into a lesson in persistence. Tokyo's city council approved a second gift, and in March 1912, 3,020 healthy trees of twelve varieties reached Washington. The young trees came from a famous row of cherry trees along the Arakawa River in Tokyo. On March 27, the First Lady and the wife of the Japanese ambassador planted the first two. Three years later, the United States sent flowering dogwoods to Japan in return.

The friendship was later tested by war, but in 1965 Japan sent 3,800 more Yoshino cherry trees. The episode suggests that gifts of living things carry a special kind of meaning: unlike a statue, a tree must be cared for, year after year, by the people who receive it. Today, a festival celebrates these trees every spring.
