Some people say, "If you do not start English as a child, it is too late." Is this true? A 2018 study used an online grammar quiz taken by about 670,000 people. It found that the ability to learn grammar stays high until about age 17.
To get grammar like a native speaker, it may be best to start before about age 10. But adults can still learn to use English very well.

「子どものうちに英語を始めないと手遅れだ」と言う人がいます。これは本当でしょうか。2018年の研究は、約67万人が受けたオンラインの文法クイズを使いました。その結果、文法を学ぶ力は17歳ごろまで高いままであることが分かりました。
ネイティブスピーカーのような文法を身につけるには、10歳ごろまでに始めるのが一番良いかもしれません。しかし、大人でも英語をとても上手に使えるようになれます。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
英語は子どものうちに始めないと手遅れか、という問いへの研究の答えがテーマなので A。
Q2. Until about what age does the ability to learn grammar stay high?
the ability to learn grammar stays high until about age 17 とあるので C。10歳はネイティブ並みを目指す場合の開始年齢の目安。
Q3. In this passage, "too late" means ...
too late は「遅すぎる・手遅れ」。もう間に合わない時期という意味なので D。
About 670,000 people took an online English grammar quiz, and in 2018 Hartshorne, Tenenbaum and Pinker used the results to test an old idea. According to this idea, language has a critical period. After a certain age, learning a new language becomes very difficult. The researchers estimated that the ability to learn grammar stays high until the late teens, around 17, and then slowly declines. To reach native-like grammar, learners may need to start by about age 10 in an English-speaking environment.
But starting by age 10 matters only for grammar so good that it cannot be told apart from a native speaker's. Other research shows that in school classes with only a few hours of English a week, older beginners often make faster progress than younger ones.

Q1. What is a "critical period" for language?
After a certain age, learning a new language becomes very difficult. と説明されているので C。
Q2. What does the passage say about classes with only a few hours of English a week?
older beginners often make faster progress than younger ones とあるので B。
Q3. What can we infer from the passage?
10歳ごろまでに始めることが大事なのはネイティブ並みの文法の場合だけで、年上の学習者が速く伸びる例も挙げているので、遅く始めても学べると推論できる。正解は D。
Roughly 670,000 people, native speakers and learners alike, took an online English grammar quiz, giving Hartshorne, Tenenbaum and Pinker an unusually large data set. In 2018 they used it to examine the critical period, the old idea that after a certain age a new language becomes far harder to master. Their model suggested that grammar-learning ability stays high until about age 17 and then gradually declines, later than many had assumed.
Reaching native-like grammar probably requires starting by around age 10 with immersion. These conclusions concern a narrow outcome, grammar that cannot be distinguished from a native speaker's. Pronunciation, vocabulary and practical communication were not measured. The data were also cross-sectional, so the estimates depend on model assumptions instead of on following individuals over time.
A 2021 reanalysis of the same data argued that for most groups the pattern fits a steady decline better than a sudden drop at 17. Classroom research looks at a different situation. When instruction is limited to a few hours a week, older starters often learn faster than younger ones. An early start matters most for people aiming at native-like accuracy, and much less for those who simply want to use a foreign language well.
