Do students do better at boys' schools or girls' schools? A large study looked at data from about 1.6 million students in 21 countries. At first, single-sex schools seemed a little better.
But many of these schools choose students with entrance exams. When researchers compared similar students, there was almost no difference. However, in Seoul, where high schools were decided by lottery, single-sex schools showed some good results.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What happened when researchers compared similar students?
When researchers compared similar students, there was almost no difference.
Q3. In this passage, "entrance exams" are tests that ...
Do students learn more in boys' schools and girls' schools? In 2014, researchers combined 184 studies covering about 1.6 million students in 21 countries. They separated studies that did not control for students' backgrounds from those that did, using random assignment or statistics.
In the uncontrolled studies, single-sex schools seemed slightly better in subjects like math. In the controlled studies, the difference almost disappeared. This points to a "selection effect." These schools may attract students who were already likely to do well.
Seoul gives a different result. Students there were once assigned to high schools by lottery, and those at single-sex schools scored higher on college entrance exams.

Single-sex schools often have strong academic reputations, but does separating boys and girls actually raise achievement? In a 2014 meta-analysis, Pahlke, Hyde and Allison pooled 184 studies covering about 1.6 million students from kindergarten to high school in 21 countries. They separated uncontrolled studies from those using random assignment or statistical controls for pre-existing differences. The uncontrolled ones showed modest advantages for single-sex schooling in areas such as mathematics.
In the controlled ones, the gaps shrank to almost nothing, and a few outcomes, such as girls' educational aspirations, slightly favored coeducational schools. The authors concluded that high-quality evidence does not support claims that single-sex schools are superior. The apparent benefit may be a selection effect, because single-sex schools are often selective private schools chosen by highly motivated families. Seoul tells a different story.
High school students there were once randomly assigned to schools within their districts, which removed selection bias from the comparison. Students at single-sex schools scored higher on Korean and English college entrance exams and were more likely to attend four-year universities. Other analyses have challenged these results, and the Seoul system has since changed, so the answer may differ from one country to another.
