Do video games make your grades worse? In one American study, young boys without a game console were promised one. Some got it right away, and others got it four months later. The boys who got it first played more and studied less after school. Their reading and writing scores went down.
But data from about 190,000 teenagers in 22 countries showed only very small differences. Maybe the problem is the time games take away.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What happened to the boys who got a console right away?
Their reading and writing scores went down.
Q3. In this passage, "take away" means ...
Many parents worry that video games will hurt their children's grades. In a 2010 study, researchers promised game consoles to boys aged 6 to 9 who did not have one. By lottery, half received a console immediately and half four months later. After four months, the first group spent more time playing and less time on academic activities after school, and they had lower reading and writing scores.
However, an analysis of about 192,000 fifteen-year-olds in 22 countries found that how often teenagers played games made only a tiny difference to their science, math and reading scores. The key may be what games replace. Playing before school on weekdays was linked to slightly lower scores, but playing after school was not.

Q1. How were the boys divided into two groups?
By lottery, half received a console immediately and half four months later.
Q2. What did the study of 22 countries find?
made only a tiny difference to their science, math and reading scores とあるので C。
Q3. What does "what games replace" suggest?
In a randomized controlled trial published in 2010, researchers promised a game console to boys aged 6 to 9 who did not own one. Half received it right away and half four months later. The boys who got theirs first spent more time gaming and less time on after-school academic activities, and they scored lower on reading and writing tests. The more they played, the larger the drop.
Because a lottery decided who got a console first, the study gives fairly strong evidence of cause and effect. It was also small, with just 64 boys followed for four months. Large surveys point the other way. An analysis of PISA 2009 data on about 192,000 fifteen-year-olds in 22 countries found negligible differences in science, mathematics and reading by how often students played games.
A 2022 study of around 10,000 American children even found that those who gamed more showed slightly larger gains in intelligence two years later. These surveys were observational, so they cannot show what causes what. One idea, displacement, fits both sets of results. Games may hurt learning when they crowd out reading or homework, which may matter most for young children who are just learning to read.
