Should parents help their children with homework? A big study looked at 448 studies with about 480,000 families. When parents were involved in school life, children usually did a little better.
But homework help was different. It was linked to lower grades. One reason may be that parents help children who already find school hard. In another study, talking about why learning is useful for the future seemed to work best for teenagers.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What was homework help linked to?
It was linked to lower grades.
Q3. In this passage, "involved in" school life means parents ...
be involved in ~ は「~に関わっている」。
Many parents want to help with homework when they worry about their children's grades. A 2019 review combined 448 studies covering about 480,000 families. It found that parents' involvement in school, such as attending events or talking about school, had a small positive link with children's grades and motivation.
However, helping with homework was the exception. It was linked to lower achievement. This may be partly because parents help more when their children are already struggling. Parents may also teach methods that differ from the school's, or their help may feel controlling. Another review of studies on middle school students found that the most effective approach was to talk about the value of learning and connect schoolwork to future goals.

Q1. What was the main finding of the 2019 review?
Q2. How many families did the 2019 review cover?
448 studies covering about 480,000 families とあるので A。
Q3. Why might homework help be linked to lower grades?
parents help more when their children are already struggling
Parents who show up at school events and talk with their children about school tend to have children who do better. A 2019 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin, combining 448 studies and roughly 480,000 families, found modest positive links between this kind of involvement and children's achievement, engagement and motivation. Homework assistance went the other way. It showed a small negative correlation with achievement.
Because the data are correlational, this does not prove that helping causes harm. Parents often step in only when a child is already struggling, so the weak grades may come first and the help second. Other explanations are plausible as well. A parent may teach a method that clashes with the one used in class, and controlling or anxious help can erode a child's sense of autonomy.
An earlier review argued that the quality of involvement matters more than the amount. A meta-analysis of 50 studies on young adolescents points in the same direction. The approach most strongly tied to achievement was what researchers call academic socialization: explaining why education matters, linking schoolwork to future aspirations, and planning strategies together.
