イディオムは元の場面(語源)を知ると意味を推測でき記憶にも残った。「time will tell」のような頭韻も覚えやすいが、自分では気づきにくい。
ひとことで言うとイディオムは「もともとどんな場面の言葉か」を知ると、ぐっと覚えやすくなる!
「It's raining cats and dogs.(土砂降りだ)」「break the ice(場をなごませる)」「piece of cake(楽勝)」。
- time will tell(時が解決する)
- bite the bullet(歯を食いしばって耐える)
- daydream(白昼夢)
- practice makes perfect(習うより慣れろ)

English idioms are hard because the words do not show the meaning directly. Here are two tips. First, learn where an idiom comes from. "Show someone the ropes" means "teach someone how to do a job." It may come from sailing ships, where new sailors learned to use ropes.
Second, notice the sounds. In "time will tell," two words start with t. Studies show both tips can help you remember idioms.

英語のイディオムは、単語が意味を直接表していないので難しいものです。ここに2つのコツがあります。1つ目は、イディオムがどこから来たのかを知ることです。「show someone the ropes」は「人に仕事のやり方を教える」という意味です。これは、新入りの船乗りがロープの使い方を学んだ帆船から来ているのかもしれません。
2つ目は、音に気づくことです。「time will tell」では、2つの単語が t で始まっています。研究によると、どちらのコツもイディオムを覚えるのに役立ちます。
4択リーディングクイズ
Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Here are two tips. とあり、イディオムを覚える2つのコツがテーマなので B。
Q2. What does "show someone the ropes" mean?
means "teach someone how to do a job." とあるので A。
Q3. In this passage, "notice" in "notice the sounds" means ...
notice は「気づく・注意を向ける」。time と tell が同じ t で始まることに気づく、という意味なので D。
English idioms such as "break the ice" are difficult because their meanings cannot be worked out from the individual words. Many learners therefore simply memorize them, but research suggests two better methods. The first is learning the origin of an idiom. In a 2007 series of experiments, Boers and his colleagues found that when students were told which field or scene an idiom came from, they could guess its meaning fairly accurately, and this guessing helped them remember it later.
The second method uses sound. Many fixed phrases in English, like "time will tell," use alliteration, meaning the words begin with the same sound. A 2008 study found such phrases were easier to remember, but learners rarely noticed the pattern by themselves, and a brief hint from a teacher improved recall.

Q1. What did Boers and his colleagues find in 2007?
they could guess its meaning fairly accurately, and this guessing helped them remember it later とあるので D。
Q2. What is "alliteration"?
alliteration, meaning the words begin with the same sound と定義されているので C。
Q3. Why did a teacher need to point out the alliteration?
learners rarely noticed the pattern by themselves とあるので A。自分では気づきにくいので、教師の短い指摘が助けになる。
An idiom's meaning cannot be worked out from its parts, so learners often fall back on rote memorization. Boers and colleagues have tested two better routes. The first is etymological elaboration. In a series of experiments published in 2007, university students were told the source domain of an idiom, for instance that "show someone the ropes" is traditionally linked to sailing. With that clue, they inferred the figurative meaning with considerable accuracy.
The reasoning itself, from origin to meaning, improved retention, and knowing the origin also helped learners judge whether an expression was informal. The authors credit dual coding, since a vivid scene is stored alongside the words, as well as deeper processing. Many idiom origins are uncertain or simply folk explanations, as with "raining cats and dogs," but the image can help even when the history is shaky.
The second route is phonological. Fixed phrases such as "bite the bullet" often feature alliteration, and in 2008 Lindstromberg and Boers showed that advanced Dutch-speaking learners recalled alliterative phrases better than non-alliterative ones. The learners seldom noticed the alliteration on their own, though. It took a brief prompt from the teacher to point it out.
