When you learn a new English word, do you say it in your head? This inner voice is very important. In a 1991 study in Italy, some adults had to say "the, the, the" while they learned words. This stopped their inner voice. They could still learn pairs of words in their own language.
But they had a lot of trouble learning Russian words. New words need new sounds. So listen to a word and say it first.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
頭の中の声(音のくり返し)が新しい単語の学習に大切だ、という内容なので C。
Q2. What did the adults have trouble learning when they said "the, the, the"?
they had a lot of trouble learning Russian words とあるので A。母語の単語ペアは覚えられた。
Q3. In this passage, "inner voice" means ...
do you say it in your head? の直後に This inner voice とあるので、「頭の中で聞こえる声」の意味。正解は D。
Psychologists use the term "phonological loop" for the part of memory that holds sounds by repeating them silently in the head. A 1991 Italian study showed how important it is for vocabulary learning. While learning, some adults repeated a meaningless sound aloud, which stopped them from rehearsing words in their heads. This hardly affected their learning of word pairs in their native language, which could be linked by meaning.
However, it greatly reduced their learning of Russian words, because the sounds were new. In Finland, a 1992 study followed children for three years and found that those who could accurately repeat English-like nonsense words later did better in English, but not especially in math. This suggests that hearing and holding new sounds is a key step in learning words.

Q1. What is the "phonological loop"?
the part of memory that holds sounds by repeating them silently in the head と定義されているので B。
Q2. Why was learning native word pairs hardly affected?
word pairs in their native language, which could be linked by meaning とあるので D。
Q3. What can we infer from the Finnish study?
無意味語をくり返せる子は英語の成績がよかったが、算数とは特に関係がなかったので、言語学習に特有の力と推測できる。正解は C。
A new foreign word arrives as a string of unfamiliar sounds, and holding that string in mind seems to depend on the phonological loop. This part of working memory keeps speech sounds active through silent rehearsal. In 1991, Papagno, Valentine and Baddeley blocked that rehearsal with a method called articulatory suppression. Adult participants repeated a meaningless syllable aloud while they studied, which left no room for inner repetition.
Learning pairs of native-language words barely suffered, because the pairs could be connected through meanings the participants already knew. Learning Russian vocabulary suffered badly. Service then followed Finnish schoolchildren for three years. Children who repeated English-like pseudowords accurately did better in English later on, while the same skill showed only a weak link with mathematics.
In a 1998 review, Baddeley and colleagues argued that the phonological loop is a language-learning device and much more than a place to hold a phone number. The Finnish data are correlational, though, and the influence probably runs both ways, since a larger vocabulary also makes new sound patterns easier to hold. Memorizing a word's spelling and meaning without knowing how it sounds may bypass the very system these experiments point to.
