Many students write a new English word ten times to learn it. But is this a good way? In a 2006 study, English speakers learned 24 Spanish words with pictures. They copied half of the words and only looked at the other half.
Later, they remembered the words they did not write better. Writing took their attention away from learning the new words. Writing can help with spelling, but try to remember a word first.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
単語を何度も書くことが覚えるのに役立つかどうかがテーマなので B。
Q2. Which words did the learners remember better?
they remembered the words they did not write better とあるので C。
Q3. In this passage, "copied" means the learners ...
copy は「書き写す」。見た単語をそのまま書いたという意味なので A。
Writing a new word over and over is a familiar way to study vocabulary, but research suggests it may not help at the very beginning. In a 2006 experiment by the linguist Barcroft, English-speaking learners of Spanish studied 24 nouns with pictures. They copied 12 of the words and simply looked at the other 12.
On tests given right after the study and two days later, they recalled more of the words they had not written. An earlier study found the same problem when learners had to make sentences with new words. Barcroft believes that writing uses up attention that the brain needs to learn the form of a word. However, another study showed that copying can help learners remember spelling, so writing is useful at a later stage.

Q1. How were the 24 Spanish nouns studied in Barcroft's experiment?
They copied 12 of the words and simply looked at the other 12. とあるので C。
Q2. According to Barcroft, why did writing reduce learning?
writing uses up attention that the brain needs to learn the form of a word とあるので A。
Q3. What can we infer from the last sentence?
copying can help learners remember spelling, so writing is useful at a later stage とあるので、単語を知った後なら書くことが役立つと推測できる。正解は C。
Write each new word ten times. Generations of students have heard that instruction, yet experiments suggest that at the first stage of learning, copying may get in the way. In a 2006 study, Barcroft had English-speaking learners of Spanish learn 24 nouns paired with pictures. They copied half of the words and simply looked at the rest.
On a test right afterward and two days later, they recalled significantly more of the words they had not written. His 2004 study found a similar disadvantage when learners had to compose sentences with new words. Barcroft's explanation is that processing resources are limited.
Forced writing pulls attention away from encoding the link between a word's form and its meaning. What counts as learning matters here. Thomas and Dieter reported in 1987 that copying strengthened memory for the written form of foreign words, so writing may still help with spelling.
Barcroft's participants were mostly English speakers learning picture-word pairs, so the results may not travel far. The strongest evidence points to retrieval. Karpicke and Roediger showed that, once words were recalled, repeated testing beat restudy for retention after one week. Writing a word from memory, instead of copying it, gets the benefits of both.
