Can thinking in a foreign language change your decisions? In 2012, American researchers gave students the same problem in two ways. "90% survive" and "10% die" mean the same thing, but they feel different.
In their first language, students were moved by the words. In a foreign language, this effect was smaller. Maybe a foreign language feels less emotional. But some later studies did not find the same result.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What happened when students read the problem in a foreign language?
In a foreign language, this effect was smaller.
Q3. What does the last sentence tell us?
some later studies did not find the same result とあるので A。
People often make different choices depending on how a problem is worded. For example, a treatment with "a 90% success rate" sounds better than one where "10% fail," even though they mean the same thing. This is called the framing effect. In 2012, researchers at the University of Chicago found that this effect became weaker when students read the problems in a foreign language. They suggested that a foreign language is less connected to emotions.
In 2014, another study found that people reading a famous moral dilemma in a foreign language were more willing to sacrifice one person to save five. A 2021 meta-analysis supported this foreign language effect, but two carefully planned, preregistered experiments in Germany failed to find it.

Q1. What is the "framing effect"?
make different choices depending on how a problem is worded This is called the framing effect とあるので A。
Q2. Why did the 2012 researchers think the effect became weaker?
a foreign language is less connected to emotions と考えたとあるので D。
Q3. What can we conclude about the foreign language effect?
Can switching to a foreign language make us think more coolly? In 2012, Keysar and colleagues at the University of Chicago tested the framing effect, the tendency to judge identical options differently depending on whether they are described as gains or losses. When participants such as American students of Japanese and Korean students of English read the problems in their foreign language, the effect shrank.
The researchers proposed that a foreign language carries weaker emotional ties, which dampens the feelings wording triggers. Two years later, a study of the well-known footbridge dilemma found that people reading in a foreign language were more willing to push one person to save five.
Later work traced this to a weaker emotional aversion to causing harm rather than more careful reasoning. A 2021 meta-analysis of 47 experiments across 17 studies confirmed effects on both moral and risky decisions, and the similarity between the native and foreign language made a difference. The effect has not always appeared. Two preregistered experiments in Germany failed to find it, and a different meta-analysis found that it shrank as reading proficiency rose. The calming power of a second language seems to fade as that language becomes easier to read.

Q2. What did the 2021 meta-analysis find to be important?
the similarity between the native and foreign language made a difference とあるので A。
