Scientists can use MRI machines to look inside the brain. Some studies show that learning a new language can change the brain, even in adults. In Sweden, young people studied a new language very hard for about three months. After that, a part of the brain for memory became bigger.
But results are different from study to study. A changed brain is not the same as a smarter brain. Even so, it shows that your study really reaches your brain.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How long did the young people in Sweden study?
studied a new language very hard for about three months とあるので D。
Q3. What does the passage say about a changed brain?
A changed brain is not the same as a smarter brain.
Brain imaging has shown that learning a language can leave marks on the brain. In 2004, a British study found that bilinguals had denser gray matter in a part of the left side of the brain. The density was higher in people who were better at their second language and had started earlier. In 2012, Swedish researchers scanned young adults before and after three months of intensive language training to become interpreters.
Their hippocampus, which is linked to memory, grew larger. Students who studied other subjects just as hard showed no similar change. But a 2016 review pointed out that results vary widely between studies. Bilinguals differ in when they started and how often they use each language, and researchers analyze brain images in different ways.

Q1. What did the 2004 British study find?
bilinguals had denser gray matter ... The density was higher in people who were better at their second language and had started earlier とあるので B。
Q2. Why was the comparison group in the Swedish study important?
Students who studied other subjects just as hard showed no similar change
Q3. According to the 2016 review, why do results vary?
Bilinguals differ in when they started ... and researchers analyze brain images in different ways とあるので C。
In 2004, a neuroimaging study in Nature reported that bilinguals had denser gray matter in the left inferior parietal region of the brain. The density correlated positively with second-language proficiency and negatively with the age at which learning began. A 2012 Swedish study was more convincing, because it tracked the same people over time. Military interpreter trainees studied a new language intensively for about three months, and their hippocampus and parts of the language-related cortex grew.
A control group of students in other fields, who worked just as hard, showed no comparable change. Most structural studies, though, are cross-sectional. They look at people at a single point in time, so it is hard to tell whether language experience changed the brain or whether people with certain brains became bilingual. A 2016 review found that results vary considerably.
Bilinguals differ in when they learned, how well they speak and how much they use each language, and labs analyze their scans in different ways. A bigger brain region is also not the same thing as a better-working mind. A 2018 meta-analysis of 152 adult studies found no clear behavioral advantage in executive functions once publication bias was corrected.
