Some people can speak ten or more languages. Scientists at MIT looked at the brains of 34 people who speak five or more languages. They used a brain scanner. When people heard a language they knew well, the language areas of the brain worked harder.
But there was one surprise. For their first language, the brain worked no harder than for an equally strong foreign language. The brain can understand the first language very easily.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. How many people did the scientists study?
looked at the brains of 34 people とあるので B。
Q3. In this passage, "first language" means ...
Some people, called hyperpolyglots, can speak ten or more languages. In a 2024 study, Fedorenko and colleagues at MIT used fMRI to study 34 people who spoke at least five languages, 16 of whom spoke ten or more. The participants listened to their native language, foreign languages they knew to different degrees, and languages they did not know. The brain's language network responded more strongly to languages they knew better.
However, the native language was an exception. It caused a similar or weaker response than an equally strong foreign language. In addition, unknown languages that were similar to a known language caused more activity than unrelated unknown languages.

Q1. What happened when participants heard languages they knew better?
The brain's language network responded more strongly to languages they knew better.
Q2. Why was the native language an exception?
母語は例外だと述べた直後に、it caused a similar or weaker response than an equally strong foreign language と説明しているので C。
Q3. A person who knows Spanish hears Portuguese for the first time. What does the study suggest?
Sixteen of the 34 polyglots in a 2024 MIT study spoke ten or more languages. Fedorenko and colleagues used precision fMRI to map each person's language network individually, and the results appeared in Cerebral Cortex. Participants listened to passages in their native language, in several languages they knew with varying proficiency, and in languages they did not know.
In general, the better a person knew a language, the more strongly the network responded. The native language broke this pattern. It produced a response similar to or weaker than that for an equally proficient foreign language, as if it took almost no effort to process. Unfamiliar languages related to one the participant knew also drew more activity than unrelated ones, perhaps because the brain was searching for familiar words and structures.
The study has clear limits. Proficiency was self-rated, the sample was small and self-selected, and people were scanned at a single point in time, so nobody can say whether this efficiency helps people learn many languages or results from learning them. One result did repeat an earlier finding. Polyglots respond less to their native language than non-polyglots do, which points to efficiency rather than size.
