メロいとは？意味と英語での言い方　10代の流行語ランキングで上位に定着

Meroi is one of the most popular slang words among young people in Japan. It describes someone who is so cool or cute that you feel you are melting. The word comes from meromero, which means falling deeply for someone.

「メロい」は、日本の若者のあいだで最も人気のあるスラングの一つです。とてもかっこよかったり、かわいかったりして、自分がとろけてしまいそうに感じる相手のことを言います。この言葉は、だれかにすっかり夢中になるという意味の「メロメロ」から来ています。

In February, a research company asked 200 high school students about popular words. Meroi came second with 10.9 percent. It was first in the company's last survey.

2月、ある調査会社が高校生200人に、はやっている言葉について聞きました。「メロい」は10.9％で2位になりました。この会社の前回の調査では1位でした。

Two other surveys in May and June also put meroi in second place. In both of them, first place went to a phrase from an idol group's song.

5月と6月の別の2つの調査でも、「メロい」は2位でした。どちらの調査でも、1位はアイドルグループの曲から生まれたフレーズでした。

Fans often use meroi to talk about their favorite idols and actors. In a 2025 survey by a beauty app, more than 80 percent of users knew the word. Many of them learned it on X or TikTok.

ファンは、好きなアイドルや俳優について話すときによく「メロい」を使います。美容アプリが2025年に行った調査では、利用者の80％以上がこの言葉を知っていました。その多くは、XやTikTokでこの言葉を知りました。

The slang word meroi has kept its place near the top of Japan's youth buzzword rankings this year. It is used to describe someone so attractive that they leave you meromero, a Japanese word for being completely smitten. The word works for both cool and cute people.

スラングの「メロい」は、今年も日本の若者の流行語ランキングで上位の座を保っています。相手を「メロメロ」、つまりすっかり夢中にさせてしまうほど魅力的な人を言い表すのに使われます。かっこいい人にも、かわいい人にも使えます。

In February, Shibuya Trend Research surveyed 200 high school students aged 15 to 18. Meroi came second among the words they said were popular, with 10.9 percent. It had been first in the group's previous survey.

2月、渋谷トレンドリサーチは15歳から18歳の高校生200人を調査しました。はやっている言葉として、「メロい」は10.9％で2位でした。前回の調査では1位でした。

Later surveys showed the same result. A ranking released in June by the youth research team Alpha Z Soken put meroi second with 16.7 percent of 239 respondents. A survey of 600 people aged 15 to 29 by Wakamono Real Lab, published in July, also placed it second. In both rankings, the top spot went to a phrase taken from an idol group's song.

その後の調査でも、同じ結果が出ました。若者の研究チーム「αZ総研」が6月に発表したランキングでは、「メロい」が回答者239人の16.7％で2位でした。若者リアルラボが15歳から29歳の600人に行い、7月に発表した調査でも2位でした。どちらのランキングでも、1位はアイドルグループの曲から生まれたフレーズでした。

The word spread mainly through social media rather than television. In a survey by the beauty review app LIPS in the autumn of 2025, more than 80 percent of 2,231 users said they knew the word. Most of them first saw it on X, TikTok or Instagram. Among teenage users, nearly 70 percent said they were interested in talk about meroi celebrities.

この言葉は、テレビよりも主にSNSを通じて広まりました。美容のクチコミアプリLIPSが2025年秋に行った調査では、利用者2231人の80％以上がこの言葉を知っていると答えました。その多くが、X、TikTok、インスタグラムで初めてこの言葉を目にしました。10代の利用者では、7割近くが「メロい」有名人の話題に関心があると答えました。

The word is popular among fans who talk about their favorite idols, actors and comedians. It has also produced new forms, such as merosugi, meaning too attractive, and merotsuku.

この言葉は、好きなアイドルや俳優、お笑い芸人について語るファンのあいだで人気です。「メロすぎ」（魅力的すぎる）や「メロつく」のような、新しい形も生まれています。
