What Does Meroi Mean?

1Meroi is one of the most popular slang words among young people in Japan. It describes someone who is so cool or cute that you feel you are melting. The word comes from meromero, which means falling deeply for someone.

2In February, a research company asked 200 high school students about popular words. Meroi came second with 10.9 percent. It was first in the company's last survey.

3Two other surveys in May and June also put meroi in second place. In both of them, first place went to a phrase from an idol group's song.

4Fans often use meroi to talk about their favorite idols and actors. In a 2025 survey by a beauty app, more than 80 percent of users knew the word. Many of them learned it on X or TikTok.

全文訳

1「メロい」は、日本の若者のあいだで最も人気のあるスラングの一つです。とてもかっこよかったり、かわいかったりして、自分がとろけてしまいそうに感じる相手のことを言います。この言葉は、だれかにすっかり夢中になるという意味の「メロメロ」から来ています。

22月、ある調査会社が高校生200人に、はやっている言葉について聞きました。「メロい」は10.9％で2位になりました。この会社の前回の調査では1位でした。

35月と6月の別の2つの調査でも、「メロい」は2位でした。どちらの調査でも、1位はアイドルグループの曲から生まれたフレーズでした。

4ファンは、好きなアイドルや俳優について話すときによく「メロい」を使います。美容アプリが2025年に行った調査では、利用者の80％以上がこの言葉を知っていました。その多くは、XやTikTokでこの言葉を知りました。

文法ポイント：so 〜 that …（とても〜なので…）

so ＋ 形容詞 ＋ that 〜 で「とても…なので〜」と、程度とその結果を表す。本文の so cool or cute that you feel you are melting は「とてもかっこいい、またはかわいいので、とろけてしまいそうに感じる」という意味。
