A 30-minute afternoon nap helped people remember new pictures, a study in Singapore found. Researchers at the National University of Singapore did the study.
The team tested 32 young adults. Each person came to the lab on four different days. On three of the days, they took a nap for 10, 30, or 60 minutes. On the other day, they stayed awake. After that, they looked at 160 pictures and took a memory test later.
Only the 30-minute nap helped them remember the pictures better. But all the naps made people less sleepy and put them in a better mood. After the 30- and 60-minute naps, people were a little slow at first. This went away within 30 minutes.
The study was small, and the people in it were not teenagers. The researchers said a 30-minute nap seems to give the best balance. They also said people should allow about 10 more minutes to fall asleep.

A 30-minute afternoon nap helped young adults take in new information, while shorter and longer naps showed no clear benefit, researchers in Singapore have found. Ruth Leong, Michael Chee and colleagues at the National University of Singapore published the study in the journal Sleep in February 2023.
The team tested 32 young adults with an average age of about 26. The volunteers usually got little sleep at night, and they kept to their normal schedule before each session. On four separate days, each person either stayed awake or napped for 10, 30 or 60 minutes.
Ninety minutes after waking up, the volunteers viewed 160 pictures. About three and a half hours later, they saw those pictures mixed with new ones and judged which they had seen before. Only after the 30-minute nap did scores clearly beat those on the day without a nap. The 60-minute nap made no clear difference, and the 10-minute nap made none at all.
All three nap lengths improved mood and made people feel less sleepy, with some benefits lasting up to four hours. After the 30- and 60-minute naps, reaction times were slower for a short time, a state known as sleep inertia. This grogginess cleared within 30 minutes of waking.
The study was small and did not include teenagers. The researchers said no nap length was a clear winner, but 30 minutes appeared to offer the best balance between benefit and practicality. They suggested allowing about 10 extra minutes to fall asleep.
An earlier study by the same research group did look at teenagers. Over about two weeks at a boarding school, 112 students aged 15 to 19 either slept only at night or split their sleep between the night and a 90-minute afternoon nap. Students on the split schedule did better on afternoon memory tasks, even when their total sleep time was the same. Their morning learning did not suffer, even though they slept less at night.
