A Japanese chemist has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Kenso Soai is a professor emeritus at Tokyo University of Science. He will share the prize with Henri Kagan, another chemist.

Many molecules have two forms. The two forms are like your left and right hands. They look almost the same, but they are mirror images. In living things, most of these molecules come in only one form.

Soai found a special chemical reaction. In the reaction, the new molecule helps to make more of itself. It is called the Soai reaction. It may help explain a mystery about how life began.

Soai was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1950. At a news conference, he thanked his students. He also said he was very happy to share the prize with Kagan.
