Scientists have read a burnt scroll from ancient Rome without opening it. They used strong X-rays and AI. The team announced the news in Naples, Italy, on June 25, 2026.

In the year 79, a volcano called Mount Vesuvius erupted in Italy. Hot ash covered the Roman town of Herculaneum. Hundreds of scrolls in a big house became black and hard, like charcoal. If people try to open the scrolls, they break into pieces.

The scientists looked inside one scroll with very strong X-rays. Then computers and AI found the ink. The computers unrolled the scroll on a screen, from start to finish. No one had done this with a whole scroll before.

The scroll has about 1.5 meters of writing. It is part of a lost book about gods by a Greek thinker. Nobody had read the book for almost 2,000 years. About 400 scrolls from the house are still rolled up.
