A Lost Ancient Book, Read Without Opening It

1Researchers have digitally unrolled an entire ancient scroll that was burned by a volcano nearly 2,000 years ago. The team announced the result in Naples, Italy, on June 25, 2026. The scroll contains a lost work by the Greek philosopher Philodemus.

2Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79 and buried the Roman town of Herculaneum. The heat turned a library of papyrus scrolls in a large villa into black lumps. Around 400 of these scrolls survive today. Opening them by hand would destroy them, so they have stayed rolled up for centuries.

3The researchers scanned the scrolls with powerful X-rays from a particle accelerator. Software developed at the University of Kentucky then flattened the 3D scans into readable pages. AI programs searched those pages for traces of ink. A prize contest called the Vesuvius Challenge brought in volunteers to help with the work.

4The fully unrolled scroll is known as PHerc. 1667. It revealed about 1.5 meters of text in 20 columns. The text is part of a book about the gods, known as On Gods, Book 8. Scholars had never seen this part of his writing before.

5The team also recovered more than 70 columns of text from another scroll at Oxford's Bodleian Library. In 2025, researchers had read that scroll's title, On Vices. Brent Seales of the University of Kentucky said the texts had been preserved for nearly 2,000 years but could not be read until now. His team has scanned 45 scrolls so far.
