Reading a Burnt Scroll With AI
1Scientists have read a burnt scroll from ancient Rome without opening it. They used strong X-rays and AI. The team announced the news in Naples, Italy, on June 25, 2026.
2In the year 79, a volcano called Mount Vesuvius erupted in Italy. Hot ash covered the Roman town of Herculaneum. Hundreds of scrolls in a big house became black and hard, like charcoal. If people try to open the scrolls, they break into pieces.
3The scientists looked inside one scroll with very strong X-rays. Then computers and AI found the ink. The computers unrolled the scroll on a screen, from start to finish. No one had done this with a whole scroll before.
4The scroll has about 1.5 meters of writing. It is part of a lost book about gods by a Greek thinker. Nobody had read the book for almost 2,000 years. About 400 scrolls from the house are still rolled up.

If people try to open the scrolls, they break into pieces.
