Twin giant pandas left Ueno Zoo in Tokyo on January 27, 2026. Their names are Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei. Now there are no giant pandas anywhere in Japan. This is the first time since 1972.

The twins were born at the zoo in June 2021. A truck took them to Narita Airport, and then they flew to China.

Japan's last two giant pandas left Ueno Zoo in Tokyo on January 27, 2026, and flew to China. The twins, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, were four years old. There is now not a single giant panda in Japan for the first time since 1972.
日本に残っていた最後の2頭のジャイアントパンダが2026年1月27日に東京の上野動物園を出発し、中国へ飛び立ちました。双子のシャオシャオとレイレイは4歳でした。日本にジャイアントパンダが1頭もいなくなるのは、1972年以来初めてです。
A truck carried the twins from the zoo to Narita Airport. From there, they boarded a flight to a breeding facility in China. Hundreds of fans gathered outside the zoo in the winter cold. Some wore panda hats, and many held up their phones to record the moment. The zoo's director described mixed feelings of thanks, hope, and sadness.
