Japan Has No Pandas for the First Time Since 1972
1Japan's last two giant pandas left Ueno Zoo in Tokyo on January 27, 2026, and flew to China. The twins, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, were four years old. There is now not a single giant panda in Japan for the first time since 1972.
2A truck carried the twins from the zoo to Narita Airport. From there, they boarded a flight to a breeding facility in China. Hundreds of fans gathered outside the zoo in the winter cold. Some wore panda hats, and many held up their phones to record the moment. The zoo's director described mixed feelings of thanks, hope, and sadness.
3The twins were born at Ueno in June 2021, but they belonged to China. Pandas living overseas are loaned by China, usually for breeding and research. Any cubs born abroad are also owned by China. The twins' parents had already returned to China in September 2024. Four pandas at a theme park in Wakayama Prefecture went back in 2025.
4Pandas first came to Japan in 1972, when the two countries established diplomatic relations. The first pair, Kang Kang and Lan Lan, arrived at Ueno Zoo that year as gifts from China. Some observers linked the departure to recent tensions between Tokyo and Beijing. However, the return had been planned earlier.
5There are currently no plans for new pandas to come to Japan, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.
