Oxford University Press has chosen rage bait as its Word of the Year for 2025. Rage bait is a post or video that tries to make people angry on purpose. The dictionary maker announced the word on December 1.

オックスフォード大学出版局が、2025年の「今年の単語」に rage bait を選びました。rage bait とは、わざと人を怒らせようとする投稿や動画のことです。この辞書の出版社は、12月1日にこの単語を発表しました。

More than 30,000 people voted online for three days. Rage bait beat two other words, aura farming and biohack. Aura farming means trying hard to look cool.

3日間で3万人以上がネットで投票しました。rage bait は、aura farming と biohack という2つの単語に勝ちました。aura farming は「かっこよく見せようとがんばること」という意味です。

Rage means strong anger, and bait is food that people use to catch fish. So rage bait uses anger to catch your attention. When people get angry, they often comment on the post and share it. Then even more people see the post.

rage は「激しい怒り」、bait は魚をつるときに使う「えさ」のことです。つまり rage bait は、怒りを使ってあなたの注意を引きつけるのです。人は怒ると、よく投稿にコメントしたり、シェアしたりします。そうすると、その投稿はさらに多くの人に見られます。

The phrase is not new. People have used it since the early 2000s. But Oxford said people used it three times more in the past year.

この言葉は新しいものではありません。2000年代の初めから使われてきました。でもオックスフォードによると、この1年で使われる回数が3倍に増えました。

People use the phrase like this: That video is just rage bait, so don't reply. Last year's Word of the Year was brain rot.

Oxford University Press named rage bait its Word of the Year for 2025 on December 1. The term describes online content that is made to upset people on purpose, usually to win more clicks, comments and shares. The publisher, which produces the Oxford dictionaries, said use of the phrase tripled over the past 12 months.

The winner was decided after a three-day public vote in which more than 30,000 people took part. Rage bait beat two other finalists. Aura farming means carefully building a cool, charismatic image, often on social media. Biohack means trying to improve your body's health or performance with lifestyle changes or technology.

The phrase combines rage, a strong word for anger, with bait, the food that anglers use to attract fish. The phrase has been in use since the early 2000s. Its two parts, rage and bait, are much older. The publisher linked its sudden rise in 2025 to growing concern about digital wellbeing.

Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford Languages, said the choice shows how the internet has changed. In the past, many websites tried to win clicks by making readers curious, the method behind clickbait headlines. Today, he said, much online content is designed to stir up emotions and push people to react. He also linked rage bait to brain rot, the 2024 winner, saying anger drives engagement while constant scrolling leaves people worn out.

People often use the phrase as a warning, as in: Ignore that comment, it's just rage bait. The public has helped Oxford choose the winner since 2022. Earlier winners include goblin mode in 2022, rizz in 2023 and brain rot in 2024.
