1Oxford University Press has chosen rage bait as its Word of the Year for 2025. Rage bait is a post or video that tries to make people angry on purpose. The dictionary maker announced the word on December 1.

2More than 30,000 people voted online for three days. Rage bait beat two other words, aura farming and biohack. Aura farming means trying hard to look cool.

3Rage means strong anger, and bait is food that people use to catch fish. So rage bait uses anger to catch your attention. When people get angry, they often comment on the post and share it. Then even more people see the post.

4The phrase is not new. People have used it since the early 2000s. But Oxford said people used it three times more in the past year.

5People use the phrase like this: That video is just rage bait, so don't reply. Last year's Word of the Year was brain rot.

1オックスフォード大学出版局が、2025年の「今年の単語」に rage bait を選びました。rage bait とは、わざと人を怒らせようとする投稿や動画のことです。この辞書の出版社は、12月1日にこの単語を発表しました。

23日間で3万人以上がネットで投票しました。rage bait は、aura farming と biohack という2つの単語に勝ちました。aura farming は「かっこよく見せようとがんばること」という意味です。

3rage は「激しい怒り」、bait は魚をつるときに使う「えさ」のことです。つまり rage bait は、怒りを使ってあなたの注意を引きつけるのです。人は怒ると、よく投稿にコメントしたり、シェアしたりします。そうすると、その投稿はさらに多くの人に見られます。

4この言葉は新しいものではありません。2000年代の初めから使われてきました。でもオックスフォードによると、この1年で使われる回数が3倍に増えました。

5たとえばこう使います。「あの動画はただの rage bait だから、返信しないで」。去年の「今年の単語」は brain rot でした。

文法ポイント：make + 人 + 形容詞（人を～にする）

「人を～な気持ちにさせる」という言い方。本文の tries to make people angry（人を怒らせようとする）がその例。
