A company and a research institute in Japan built a new quantum computer. Fujitsu and RIKEN announced it on April 22, 2025. The computer has 256 qubits.

Normal computers use bits. A bit is either 0 or 1. A qubit can be 0 and 1 at the same time. Because of this, quantum computers may solve some hard problems much faster.

The new machine has four times as many qubits as the last one. The last one had 64 qubits and was built in 2023. The computer's chip must stay at about minus 273 degrees Celsius. That is colder than outer space.

Companies and researchers around the world will be able to use the computer. Scientists say quantum computers may help to make new medicines and materials. The team plans to build a computer with 1,000 qubits in 2026.
