Fujitsu and RIKEN Quadruple Their Quantum Computer
1Fujitsu and the research institute RIKEN have developed a superconducting quantum computer with 256 qubits. The two organizations announced the machine on April 22, 2025. The partners called it one of the largest machines of its kind.
2Ordinary computers store information in bits, each of which is either 0 or 1. A qubit, or quantum bit, can be in a mix of 0 and 1 at the same time. This property could allow quantum computers to handle some problems that are too complex for ordinary machines.
3The new system has four times as many qubits as the 64-qubit machine that the partners released in 2023. To fit more qubits, the engineers arranged them in a 3D structure made of small units of four qubits each. The engineers also found a way to place all of them inside the same refrigerator used for the earlier machine.
4That refrigerator keeps the chip at about 20 millikelvin, or roughly minus 273 degrees Celsius. Superconducting qubits work only at such extremely low temperatures. Researchers say machines with far more qubits and better error correction will be needed before quantum computers can solve useful problems in chemistry or medicine.
5The partners plan to offer access to the 256-qubit machine to companies and research groups around the world. Their next goal is a 1,000-qubit computer, to be installed at a new building at Fujitsu's site in Kawasaki in 2026.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 which(, each of which ...)
Ordinary computers store information in bits, each of which is either 0 or 1.
